Chick-a-Boom Rabbit Dutch Cream Ridge, NJ

Chick-a-Boom is 9 years old. She is spayed. She came from a slaughterhouse, and was handled very badly when she was there. Thrown around by the leg, ears, or whatever they could grab. She hasn’t forgotten that, and is just a bit uptight and does not like being picked up.

If I pause as I walk by, she (literally) runs over, circles my feet, asking to be petted. I kneel down, talk to her, pet her, and generally fuss over her. Tell her how pretty she is, how funny she is to watch and how glad I am that I saved her from the slaughterhouse.
I believe animals like to “hear their stories”. No, I’m not a whacko, I just think they understand the vibes you are sending and the tone of your voice speaks volumes. Somehow, I think they understand what you are telling them.

The other morning (this is true), as I was taking care of all the other bunnies, the normal conversation Chick-a-Boom and I usually have took a somber, different tone. It started out as it has many times in the past: “I took you from a slaughterhouse....” Then, this is when it suddenly turned a different route, as I continued: “A slaughterhouse is where people dump animals to be killed.” (For some reason, that particular thing I said to her, brought tears to my eyes…)

I went on talking to her: “Your breeder didn’t want you because you were not show quality, so she sent you there to be killed. She didn’t think you deserved to live.” I went on petting her, and she just sat there as she always does, listening to what I was saying.

Again, I go on talking to her: “There are about 7 billion people in the world, and only ONE cares about you….” (More tears from me..) My voice trailed off. But, when I said that, she melted in a puddle of contentedness...and tooth purred, as if to say: “One is enough. Every bunny just needs just one.”

She has been through so much, she is now a "sanctuary" bunny.
