WHY IS HE IN NEED? - His caregivers feel they are unable to meet his needs and he has come into rescue.

WHERE IS HE NOW ?- He is fostered in the St. Mary's area. He is now a year old
He has been fully vetted.

** THIS BREED CAN BE AN INCREDIBLE FAMILY MEMBER IN THE RIGHT HOME. IF YOU ARE NOT EXPERIENCED WITH THIS BREED.. WE ASK YOU TO PLEASE RESEARCH THIS BREED.
This breed is not a "DOODLE" . As gorgeous as they are...they are not a breed for most 1st time owners who have a soft energy/ timid owner as they are independent thinkers and will make decisions on their own . As an owner of this breed you will spend time going to get them rather than them coming when you call- so must never be off leash in an unsecured area as by genetics they are a wanderer . They are a loving & challenging breed and will keep you on your toes!!
They are loyal to a fault to their family/ packmates and thankfully Dex has met many people so he is extremely accepting of strangers . They are ** independent thinkers** and are a breed that can be a challenge to train. They do things because they have to and will often decide when/ and to what they will listen too which is their genetics and should not be faulted for this.... So you will find repeating commands and reinforcing to make sure he follows thru a part of your daily routine.

** ALL ABOUT DEX**
His Adoption fee is $500
He was surrendered as his owners were not able to meet his needs- physically,or mentally . Since coming into rescue / foster he is a totally different dog... having the outlet for his energy/ having a job to do and simple structure and rules in the home he is now a great house guest.
He is basically a young pup who is still learning who hadn't been given the structure he needs.He will need an experienced dog owner home to commit to training and socialization to ensure he as a pup and is still learning to ensure he is the best he can be.

** UPDATE FROM FOSTER MOM **
We had to take our dogs to the vet and Dex was quite happy to meet everyone in the vet clinic and get weighed. I think the vet tech said he weighed 74 pound

Dex was having fun drinking out of the sprinkler last week. Every time I try to get more pictures he runs away. He is doing great. He doesn't jump on us but gets very excited when guests are here and wants to jump on them but we are working on that. He is doing will at staying on his bed while we are eating. He no longer uses a crate, we just have to remember to put our sandals in the closet, he likes to eat the buckles off them. He loves little kids but just doesn't understand not all kids love kisses. He gets along great with my dogs, just a few tiffs over toys once in a while. He gets along with our cats, still loves to chase them but is very gentle with them.Once he gets past the puppy stage he is going to be great dog. He's super friendly, just has to work on his self control. He's kind of like having a giant three year old child.


Home rules:
He is full house trained and is not destructive- though he is crate and supervised. He is very food motivated and d/t his size... is an easy reach to check out the counters so NO temptations can be left out..
Having said that, he drinks out of the toilet and steals Kleenex out of the bathroom garbage.... SO no kisses for him!!
He hasn't chewed (knock on wood) anything since he's been here, even though I went out and got him a nice nylabone for extreme chewers. Helps that he is being crated when he first arrived- The first night there were a few whines and that was it. Coming home from work he was in no hurry to come out of the crate even when permitted.. and came on when he was ready.
We have learned to keep our sandals in the closet. He likes to chew the plastic buckles on them. He also likes to eat paper, such as store receipts. He doesn't bark much when outside by himself. If he sees kids coming down the walkway my our house he barks but I think it's to get their attention. He does bark at night if he hears something outside and of course that means the other two dogs have to get in on the action. If I remember to shut the curtains in our living-room that cuts the barking. Dex is no longer in a crate, he either sleeps on his bed in the living-room or on the mat at the kitchen door. He likes to be with my dogs, it's like an obstacle course when they are all laying down in a room together.

People and Personality:
Dex is as loving as they come. He is eager and happy to meet people/ strangers. d/t his size he can become over excited and uses his weight on people... but he is doing much better in his foster home and having his energy needs met is very layed back.
He's very like his pack buddy with the people approaching and friendliness, he wants to meet people and see things, he's going to be an awesome pet for some lucky family..
Dex LOVES high pitched talk.Loves it.
If you go *dexy! Come here dexy! Come here baby!* you know in that sickly sweet high voice he will just come running and knock you over with a wiggle
He definitely responds well to love as much as he responds to food.
I think the independent thinking genetics are battling with a desire to make you happy, but he just doesn't get how to make you happy consistently. He's a smart boy, he's happy, polite and friendly, he's just going to be a challenge for all the reasons that someone might expect. True to his breed, he's a huge, independent thinking task dog.
He would do best in home with children 10 yrs and older d/t his size and current training needs.

Energy:
When first arriving he was very high energy and clearly didn't have the outlets for this met. Now he has playtime, walks and visits to the dog park... so he is very laid back. lazy in the home. This breed is not high energy but must have their basic needs met to not become bored, frustrated and over excited.
This was the feedback after a start to a good routine: " This dog is the laziest goof I've ever seen.. but he is having outlets for his puppy energy.
He slept in his crate all day, and when I got home he wasn't even interested in getting out, he just acknowledged me and wandered out. We went to the park and he stuck by me, and played with griffin, sniffed around, and didn't even run around.
Now he's asleep on my left foot!


Dogs and Cats:
On his initial assessment he met dogs to confirm his temperament as well as at a temp stay before he went to foster care he met cats and did well- though supervised and leashed. Proper intro's are critical to ensure respect and safety. He lives with a lab... as well as visits the dog park though there he is more intent on following his foster mom around.

Food/ Toys:

When I feed Dex he eats in a separate room from my other two dogs, one eats in the kitchen, one eats in the laundry room and Dex eats in our back room. He sits and stays until I tell him okay go and give him a kiss on the top of his head before he eats. A couple of times when I've checked to see if he was finished eating he growled at me thinking i was one of the other dogs coming in... I raised my voice to him and took his dish away. That seems to have stopped that behaviour.

He is very stubborn. At meal time he listens better to me rather than my husband when I make him lay on his bed while we are eating. Again because of his size food can't be left unattended, counters and tables are just the right height for him to take what he wants.
He has no problem having toys taken from him. He has no issues with having his food removed .He has a high interest in food- and prefers his space from other dogs/ pets when eating and will growl if his space is invaded or will try and steal anothers food- so each is given space to finish and then bowls are removed. ** He is a counter Surfer though ..LOL **
He showed no interest in the ball at the park but when at home he plays goalie with it.
He picks things up that aren't toys, and walks around with them, and again he drops it when we make it clear that he isn't supposed to have them. (Shoes, Nintendo controllers) we have found that giving him a little poke in the hind end does more than clapping or yelling, to get him to stop doing whatever undesirable thing he might be doing.
He doesn't have trouble sharing his toys, it's my two dogs that don't like to share and that seems to be just inside. Dex's favourite toy is a baby chew toy and it just seems to stay together. So many dogs toys that are supposed to be indestructible don't last very long.

Travleing:
Dex is a excellent traveler..!!


Training- leash- commands :
Dex is very good on the leash for the most part. Moments of excitement can get him distracted.. but he takes direction well. He is really a good boy. He really is such a good boy, he knows "bed, sit, lie down, stay", and will wait to be told it's ok to eat. Come is a work in progress... as this is the one command that is a challange with this breed for consistancy
He loves going for walks. He has a mesh harness which makes it easier to walk him.

Dex recently spent a few days at a boarding facility while his fosters were away over the Holidays ....The feedback I got from meredun is that he is a happy friendly puppy who has no concept of his own size, he was accepting of strangers and wanted to meet other people and dogs.,

He is going to be a big boy, and even as he is now, I have to physically remove him from the mudroom if he wants into anothers food etc.
He doesn't get upset at all when I redirect using his his collar etc, but he's not going to be as successful in a house that isn't prepared to have to go "get him!" Instead of calling him and having him come running.

Grooming:
He hair is growing in. He had a bath last week and wasn't too happy about it.
This breed is a double coat breed. All double coat breeds shed. Komondors are shedders though they indicated as minimal shedders or non shedders if they are allowed to grow their cords
This breed is typically allowed to have their grow into Cords. He is well on his way.
Many do choose to keep this breeds hair clipped short- in a puppy cut for easier managing. He is said to shed by his foster mom but this is d/t the transistioning to his adult coat from his puppy coat.- The info on the breed site indicates :" Shedding is minimal with this breed, contrary to what one might think (once cords are fully formed). The only substantial shedding occurs as a puppy before the dreadlocks fully form. "

Please google / research about this breed before applying. He has allot of potential if given the right structure- training , a job to do and outlets for mental and physical needs. Some have been even used as therapy dogs. He needs a safe secure yard .
He would do well with an expereinced dog owner that is expereinced with independent thinking breeds, someone who has a leader quality to give consistent- fair -clear- direction.
He will need someone who is committed to enrolling into training classes for bonding and mental stimulation. A home that is active to take him for walks, exposure to ensure he remains social/ confident/ stable. A home that has no children under 10 yrs of age and restricted exposure to small children d/t his size, being over exuberant at times in using his body when excited and still needing training.

5. A home visit must be completed as part of the adoption process after the inital viewing by a rescue representative.
This is not a replacement of the meet/ greet at the Foster home.

7. We do not deliver dogs. If and once the adoption process is approved and complete the dog must be picked up at the
foster home

**** You must complete an adoption application in FULL in order for rescue to determine if the dog/cat is a good match for you and you are a good match for the Pet.

**** We do not show dogs /cats to people that merely want to drop in and look at the pet or see multiple pets **** .Not only are the pets fostered in various foster homes in various towns often hundreds of kilometers apart and not only do we simply do not have the manpower for that - more importantly it is unfair for the pet to be shown to various people and passed by - therefore we chose the most suitable application for the pet - then schedule a viewing.

** ARE YOU FULLY COMMITTED ??????? .
Rescue values the time applicants put into filling out our application and the consideration of welcoming a new member into the family/ home.

Please be considerate to rescue AND volunteers when committing to a viewing.
Too many times rescue ends up making repeated changes d/t repeated delays for the approved applicant/ application. With delays - Rescue and pets are also impacted as rescue invests personal time around personal family time/ work time and cost of travel/ gas when arranging a viewing only to then have a late cancelation /applicants not even show up with no notification or even then have applicants back out .
Repeated delays hold up foster spots for pets in crisis and in turn it can cost them their lives!!.

**** PLEASE DON'T BE THE CAUSE OF AN ANIMAL IN NEED TO LOOSE THEIR LIFE D/T BEING OUT OF TIME **.

**** If we do not carefully screen where cats/ dogs are adopted to then the cycle would only continue when the ill-suited dog ends up back in the pound.

**** As it stand pounds are begging us to find space for healthy and adoptable dogs/ cats (who will be euthanized due to a simple lack of space) - So we Thank You in advance for respecting our successful process.

SAFE PLACEMENT FOR PET AND HOME

We welcome enquiries from applicants with well-behaved canines. Please do not apply if your dog has any possession aggression, or resource guards food/toys/space/owners, has leash aggression or aggression towards other dogs. This is for the safety of our foster dog/ cat and to ensure they do not become fear defensive.
We thank you for wanting to rescue a dog/ cat and simply ask that you address and correct your dog's issues before adding an adoptive animal in to the home. By allowing only well socialized and well trained pets to be considered as a possible forever home for our rescue dogs we are looking out for both our foster dog/ cat and your dog's own best interest. We also ask that if your cat is not used to having a dog around that you expose them to a family or friend's dog several times to see if they will accept a new family member within their home, before applying.

Our rescue prides itself on adopting out the proper dog/cat to the proper family. If you would like to be considered for one of our dogs/cats please complete a adoption application as outlined in this bio.
If you are a successful applicant you will be asked to come to a viewing at the dog's/ cats foster home with your entire family, as well as your existing dog { if any }. It does not Guarantee an approved adoption. This viewing will allow your family, the foster home and I to see if this is a suitable match and ensure everyone is on the same page.
We will all take 24 hours to mull it over and go from there. Adoptions are not rushed. Our priority is placing the dog/cat in the proper family. On intake a new dog/ cat is assessed in a foster home to determine which type of home suits them best.

We will give preference to any application that has the fortitude to consider all aspects of the pets needs- both physical and Mental needs, To take their newly adopted dog to training to bond or cat into a safe indoor environment and learn together from a professional as needed who has the dog's best interest at heart.

If there are any dog/ cat lovers out there now is the time to step up - there are many on the short list to be killed in shelters all over due to simple lack of space - please consider helping now - dogs/ cats are killed every hour - they die by being jabbed thru the heart (heart-sticking) and being gassed to death more often than humane euthanization!

We always need foster homes for the constant influx of new dogs/ cats in need - if you are interested in fostering - please consider that the rescue vets the cat /dog before they go in to foster care - they also provide a new dog collar and rescue i.d. tag on intake - as well as food - and any additional vetting needed thereafter the initial vetting.
