Shadow Cat Advocates, Inc.
Our Mission
Shadow Cat Advocates (SCA) is a non-profit organization and community resource. Our mission is to aid, assist, protect, and defend feral cats throughout Stafford, Fredericksburg, and Spotsylvania, VA. We provide Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) services, education, outreach and rescue services.
Based on the unique needs of each cat we come into contact with, we may provide foster care and adoptive services to cats and kittens we trap. The cats and kittens we rescue are evaluated by a Veterinarian, receive appropriate medical care, and the cats and kittens will either be returned to their home colony or enter foster care where we will seek to find loving adoptive homes for each cat. Our cats and kittens available for adoption are advertised on our SCA website, on Pet Finders and on our Facebook page.
If you are in need of assistance to humanly manage feral cats residing in Stafford, Fredericksburg, and Spotsylvania, VA, SCA may be able to loan out our traps, provide TNR guidance, and offer verbal support. Our services are provided entirely by volunteers and we have no paid staff members. We rely on grants and donations to support our efforts.
Adoption Policy
After your adoption application is received, our Adoption Specialist will contact you to speak with you about the pet you are interested in. We will check with your current vet to make sure your current or former pets were given shots and vaccines as recommended.
We will set up a time for you to visit the cat you are interested in and help you determine whether it is a good match for your family. We may also suggest other cats that may also fit your preferences.
We generally recommend that kittens be adopted in pairs as they are so energetic and may get lonely and destructive if left on their own for too long. With a sibling to keep the kitten company there is a reduced risk of aggression and undesirable behavior..
If the application is approved, we will coordinate either bringing your new family member to you or arrange for you to pick up your new cat/kitten at their foster home.
We will provide initial information on your pet and his/her routine, show or tell you how to set up a “safe room” so your new pet feels safe in their new home, and we will provide ongoing support as you and your new cat adjust to one another.
Our adoption fee is $125 and includes testing, de-worming, vaccines appropriate for the age of the cat, microchipping, and spay/neuter as appropriate.
