Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA
Our Mission
Our mission is to promote respect, compassion, education and advocacy resulting in a humane and sustainable environment for all animals. The Rockingham-Harrisonburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in August 1972 in order to provide general assistance to animals and the public.
Adoption Policy
Adoption applicants must complete an application form as the first step towards acquiring a pet. Your application will be verified by staff who will explain the next step in your adoption process. All adoption criteria must be met before the adoption is approved. Once approved, you are under no obligation to complete the adoption if you change your mind.
All dogs and cats are required to be spayed or neutered. The first step to solving the pet overpopulation problem is to prevent contributing to it. The deposit you pay at the time of the adoption goes towards that surgery wherever you choose to establish a relationship with a veterinarian. Pets are placed in the best possible home if there is more than one application pending. We cannot place a hold or accept a deposit on a pet. Adopters may only adopt 2 pets within a 30-day period.
We can and do adopt to out-of-area homes given that the pet is spayed or neutered before crossing county lines per Virginia state law and the applicant has physically interacted with the pet. We will not ship a pet.
