Our Mission

Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society was created to help educate the community on the dangers of merle to merle breeding and to rescue dogs that are a product of this bad breeding practice. When a merle is bred to another merle, their puppies have a twenty-five percent chance of inheriting two copies of the merle gene. When the puppies inherit two copies, they are called double merles. Double merles often are deaf, blind, or both. Since these puppies are born with impairments, they are often dumped, used as bait dogs, or euthanized at an early age. Our mission is to educate the public on the dangers of merle to merle breeding and rescue those in need. Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society will provide basic care and full vetting for any dog pulled into the rescue. Full vet care includes vaccinations, microchips, spaying/neutering, ophthalmology exams, heartworm preventative, flea and tick preventative, and any other medical needs that arise. On top of basic care and vetting, Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society will also provide behaviorist consults and training for dogs pulled into the program that need extra help due to their impairments. Our hope is that raising awareness on the dangers of merle to merle breeding will decrease the number of puppies born as a double merle. A decrease in double merles being born will then lead to a decrease in the number of double merles needing rescue. Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society will provide education for adopters to show that special needs dogs are just as adoptable as dogs without impairments. Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society will save the lives of double merles already born and prevent further continuation of this preventable creation of special needs dogs.
Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society founder, Moria Turner, learned about double merles when she fostered her dog Luna. Fostering Luna fired her passion for raising awareness about double merles and rescuing those already born. After fostering Luna, Moria knew she needed to do more as this type of breeding is completely preventable. The goal is to not only rescue double merles and educate breeders about merle to merle breeding, but to educate the community as well. Moria decided to create Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society to achieve this goal.
Currently, Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society wishes to host community events to raise awareness and provide for double merles needing rescue. Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society will utilize all donations to make sure each dog receives the proper vet care, training, and basic care needed to allow them to thrive. When it comes time to rehome these special dogs, Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society will thoroughly screen any potential adopters to ensure they will be going to the best, most educated homes that are patient and understanding.
As Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society grows, Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society wishes to purchase an office to store paperwork and supplies. Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society will provide education for adopters and training for fosters to make sure these special needs dogs can thrive in their everyday lives. Happy Tails Animal Rescue Society wishes to host events state-wide to spread awareness and discourage this dangerous breeding practice. All of this will be accomplished with a strong board of directors, volunteers, and fosters who all have the same mission.
