North Jersey Guinea Pig and Hamster Rescue, Inc.
Our Mission
Founded in 2005, the North Jersey Guinea Pig and Hamster Rescue, Inc. was created to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home unwanted guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas, gerbils, pet rats, mice and other pocket pets. We are a "no kill" shelter that seeks to place these animals in loving homes, no matter how long it takes. We are located in Budd Lake, NJ.
THE RESCUE ACCEPTS PAYPAL
You may make a donation by clicking on the link above our adoption application.
GOING ON VACATION? We offer boarding services. For $10 a day per cage, we provide unlimited timothy hay/pellets, a bowl of fresh greens/veggies twice daily, daily cage cleaning and a nail trim if needed.
IF YOU NEED TO SURRENDER AN ANIMAL TO THE RESCUE, as of December 3, 2023, we are accepting hamsters, gerbils and mice. We are accepting guinea pigs from a waiting list. If you have one of the types of animals we are not currently accepting, please send us an email with the type and number of animals, and gender if known. We will add your name to the waiting list and contact you as soon as we have an opening. Please know we do not euthanize due to lack of space. This requires that we stop taking animals for short periods when there is no additional cage space here.
Please do not list pets for free on Craigslist or other classified ads. Many of these animals will be used as snake food or pit bull bait. Please ask for a modest re-homing fee. This will help ensure your pet goes to a home where it will be loved and well cared for.
VETERINARIANS
We just starting going to Montville Animal Hospital. Dr. Kara is very knowledgeable about exotics and very kind as well. The address is 6 Whitehall Road, in Towaco. The phone number is 973-335-8007
or you can go to the House Rabbit website at www.rabbit.org, where they have a list of vets for your state and/or county.
We recommend Oxbow brand pellets and hay. They are high quality, timothy based products.
ADOPTION FEES
We ask $35 for a single guinea pig, $55 for a pair and $65 for a trio. For a syrian hamster, we ask $15, for a pair of gerbils or dwarf hamsters $20.
CAGE SIZE
We recommend a minimum cage size of 32" by 20" for a single piggie, 36" by 20" for a pair of females and 39" by 20" for a pair of males. Ideally, you should obtain the largest cage you have room for. The rescue has gently used cages available for an additional donation to the rescue. Each cage comes with a hidey house, food bowls, water bottle with holder and a sleep sack/cuddle cup.
CAGE BEDDING
Most cage beddings are safe to use with the exception of cedar (toxic fumes) and corn cob (easily ingested and can cause digestive blockages)
WISH LIST
The rescue can always use:
Oxbow or Small Pet Select Timothy hay/pellets
Hamster/Gerbil Food
Cage Bedding (no cedar or corn cob)
Fragrance Free laundry detergent
White vinegar
Newspaper
