McDowell County Animal Shelter
Our Mission
The purpose of the Animal Shelter is to reduce the the general health risk to the public associated with stray, vicious, and potentially rabid animals, to inhibit animal reproduction which further contributes to animal overpopulation in the county and to reduce the number of animals that must be euthanized on a regular basis because of a lack of suitable home, adopters, and the presence of diseases. McDowell County Public Services oversees the Animal Shelter. The Shelter operates as a managed intake facility, meaning that stray animals are priority and unwanted animals are accepted as space allows. The Shelter also serves as an adoption center for those animals that are adoptable. The adoption fee for both dogs and cats is $65 and includes spay/neuter and age appropriate vaccinations.
