Somerset Humane Society
Our Mission
Mission Statement:
To foster and promote respect, responsibility, and compassion for all animals through education, advocacy and leadership. We care for the homeless, defend and seek healing for the abused, and are tirelessly committed to the safety and wellbeing of all animals.
SHS is a 501(c)3 no-kill shelter located in Skowhegan, Maine that relies primarily on private donors to fund our programs and services. We do not receive any federal tax money and we are not affiliated with any other humane organization in the United States. We are committed to providing temporary housing and care for stray and abandoned animals from the many towns we serve. We do our best to return lost pets to their owners and find suitable homes for the pets that are not reclaimed, as well as taking in owner surrendered pets as space permits.
Adoption Policy
The first step is to fill out our online pre adoption application which is found on our website. This will get your information to us and let us know which pet you are interested in so we can begin the approval process on our end.
Please be aware that filling out the pre-adoption application does not guarantee adoption of the pet. We recommend that you follow up your application with a call or a visit to the shelter to meet the pet you are interested in.
When we receive multiple applications for the same pet, our policy is to choose the home we feel is best suited for that pet’s unique needs. We can not hold available pets for more than 24 hours for any potential adopters.
Please call the shelter at 207-474-6493 during business hours to ask any further questions about the adoption process.
