Humane Society's Mountain Shelter
Our Mission
Founded in 1987, The Humane Society's Mountain Shelter is a private, non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to preventing cruelty, suffering, and inhumane treatment to animals. We provide custodial care to animals committed to the Society. We also maintain an animal placement service. HSMS is committed to the protection of animals and is guided by the principle that all living beings have intrinsic value and thereby deserve our respect, our empathy, and our care. The Humane Society's Mountain Shelter shelters nearly 800 animals each year. Staff at HSMS love and nurture these animals daily. We feed them, keep them in a healthy and safe environment, see to their medical needs, and either find their rightful owners or put them up for adoption. HSMS is a temporary safe haven until permanent home placement is found. There are hundreds of animals who will never know a home, despite our efforts and those of Humane Societies across the country. Pet overpopulation is a problem that affects both small and large cities; therefore, one of our most urgent goals is educating the public about the importance of being responsible pet owners and Spaying or Neutering their pets.
Adoption Policy
We have a series of questions we ask upon appointment being made.
These include:
Do you have any other pets at home ? If so what kind and how many? We require them to have vaccines up to date and prefer that they come with you for the meet and greet to be sure everyone gets along.
Who is your vet? We can call and get this done prior to you coming in.
Who all lives in your home?
Do you own or rent? If you rent we need permission from land lord.
Do you have a fenced in yard?
We also have an adoption application that is filled out along with a vet check to ensure pets are being cared for. We have switched to showing our dogs one on one with potential adopters. Our dogs tend to be less stressed this way and families can get to know their personalities better. Our kennel staff is really great at providing potential adopters with information about each and every dog.
Our Adoption Fees are as follows:
Puppies less than 4 months $150
Dogs over 4 months $100
Kittens $100
Cats over a year $80
Our animals are spayed or neutered and vaccinated (age appropriate, may still need boosters or Rabies depending of age of animal).
We heartworm test our dogs, deworm, start on Heartworm preventative and treat for fleas.
Our Cats are tested for FELV/FIV, dewormed and treated for fleas.
We strive to provide families with healthy an happy pets.
