Meet Zukey

After an extended stay the shelter with no interest, we found a foster home for our Zukey and after several weeks with his foster, this is the update;

I have had the pleasure of having Zukey in my home for several weeks and I'm so glad that I decided to bring him home. For the first couple days, Zukey slept and slept and slept; every time I checked the camera, he was zonked out on one of his dog beds. Poor guy had lots of stress to decompress from. He has gone from being unsure about wanting affection to actively seeking it out (with a gentle nose boop to my hand) when I come into his room to spend time with him. I am still respectful of his space and "ask" him if he wants to be pet and often times the answer is "yes, pet me!!" Other times it is "not right now, I want to lay on my bed beside you." He prefers his dog beds over furniture (he is scared of jumping up on any furniture) and is also learning that jumping in and out of the car isn't such a harrowing experience. Zukey is perfectly housetrained and instantly picked up on the potty schedule. He is also well mannered in the home and has only chewed on "dog appropriate" things and can be left for a full workday without incident. He has joined me on a couple woodland hikes and as long as the temps aren't too frigid and he has some winter gear on, really seems to enjoy himself. I have noticed that he startles easy at sudden noises or movements and is quite sensitive to environmental changes in general. For this reason, a quieter home with adults would be best for Zukey. He has only met my dogs in passing (through a gate) when he goes outside for potty breaks but doesn't pay them much attention. I do not plan on introducing him any further to my dogs in the home as Zukey would thrive as the one and only dog in your life. I feel like I am just beginning to understand who Zukey is after these several weeks and I hope that he can find someone who is dedicated to taking it slow and learning what a wonderful dog he as he reveals himself. Being in a shelter (no matter how wonderful the facility) for such a long period of time is hard on a dog, but Zukey is a prime example of how resilient dogs can be. He's ready to move on with his new life. Could that be with you? If you are interested in discussing if Zukey could be the right fit for your life and to set up an appointment to meet him, call the shelter at 906-632-2519.
