My Story: I was one of 51 dogs rescued in January from a puppy mill by the Animal Humane Society (AHS). We had not been well cared for and were living in filthy cages. You can read more about it and see a story that was on TV here. I was very, very shy, so the folks at AHS wanted me to go to a foster home for some TLC and rehab. They called Pet Haven and here I am!
I have been in Pet Haven for about a year and my foster mom says I have made a lot of progress. When I first came here I did not know anything about living with people in a house and being a companion. Everything was new and very scary. Fortunately there were other dogs in my foster home and I liked being with them. I have learned to walk on a leash, sit on laps without shaking, approach people I don’t know and let them pet me, and take treats from the people in my foster home (I’m really good at that).
I really like it at my foster home, but I need to find a place to call my forever home. I'd like it to be quiet, like I am. I would like another small dog or someone who is around a lot so I can continue to learn new things. I would like to go on short walks when the weather is nice. I'm not a big cuddler, but I may learn to like that. I am very easy to care for because I don't demand much - just some gentle care and time to finish learning how to be a companion.
Commands/Tricks: I have learned “outside” and “suppertime” and what the refrigerator door sounds like when my people open it.
Crate/Potty Trained: I was used to just going potty in the cage I lived in but in my foster home I learned that I should do my business on piddle pads in the house or go out in the back yard. I will also go potty when I’m on a leash walk.
Activity Level: I am calm most of the time. I like to sleep in a comfy dog bed close to where the action is. I bark when there is commotion, but my foster mom says I am very quiet for a poodle. I really like to play with my foster sister Trixie. She is a yorkie and we wrestle and bite each other’s ears.
Fun Things I Do: A lot of stuff is still scary to me so I don’t try much new. When the weather is pleasant I like to lie in the grass and soak up the sun and feel the cool breeze. I don’t like toys – the ones that squeak make me very nervous. My foster sister Trixie taught me to wiggle and prance to get attention from people. When you do that they pet you and sometimes give you treats. I like that.
Socialization/who I currently live with: I live with 3 other little dogs and 2 people. We all get along fine. I like to be in the same room as my people are and will sit on their laps if they scratch and pet me. I’ve met some little kids at adoption events and they are OK - not as scary as big people. I don’t bite anyone... except goofy Trixie, and that is just play.
Susie is attending Pet Haven's small dog adoption events and her adoption fee is $200(cash or check only) and includes spay/neuter, heartworm check, current vaccinations, and microchip and registration.
Due to post-adoption services provided, it is Pet Haven's policy to only place dogs into homes within a 60-mile radius of the Twin Cities area.
