Meet Samantha
We are a volunteer run rescue and donate our time to these dogs. IF you are not serious about moving forward in our adoption process, please do not apply. If someone other than yourself is part of the decision making process, please make sure you have spoken with them and they are on board. We really do not want to waste anyone's time if you are not serious about adopting this dog.
Samantha is a 6.5 year old spayed female Australian Cattle Dog mix, weighing 65 pounds and currently residing in San Antonio, TEXAS. She is available to transport out of state once an approved adopter is lined up!
If you have ever wanted a cattle dog without having to TRAIN a cattle dog, Ms. Samantha is the girl for you. She's still young enough that she loves playing with her foster siblings and chasing after the occasional toy, but she's mature and wise enough to know that sometimes the best thing you can do is....nothing...while on the couch...with you loved one near by.
Samantha lives in a home with several other dogs and has been around dogs her size or smaller (40lb) with no issues. She will play when the other dog initiates it, but usually she would rather chill in the sun baking like a Idaho russet than romp and roam too much. She picks up cues well from the other dogs, ceasing playing when they're done or going for more when they're both interested. When encountering other dogs, Samantha can be trusted to greet each with a friendly wag of her tail.
While we have no history with cats, Samantha is around her foster mom's young grandchildren on a weekly basis and has exhibited zero issues. We think she would prefer a home with older children who don't run or scream, as this does scare her, and she's still learning to not be fearful of loud noises or new situations.
Samantha also has solid house and leash manners - walking calmly next to you on lead, never pulling and keeping pace with you, and she is fully house broken and trusted to stay loose even while unsupervised. Her foster has not had a reason to crate Samantha, and Sam for her part has ensured she is not given one either - usually found in the same spot on the couch when her Mom returns as when she left.
While Samantha is not food aggressive nor does she resource guard her "things," she is fed away from the other dogs as they are fond of stealing her meals, leaving her with none. She doesn't mind this though, and often lets her foster siblings steal her toys, bones and treats too.
Samantha is rather low key, overall very happy to lay on the couch all day or, if it is an especially pleasant day out, she enjoys being outside and doing her best Sheryl Crow - soaking up the sun.
Samantha would do best with a low to moderately active home - a fenced backyard and doggy door, or a couple walks around the neighborhood; a dog sibling of equal (or ideally more) energy to her for company; and with lots of love, as she is still a bit of a Nervous Nelly. She is not afraid to meet new people, although she does not necessarily seek them out. but she is quite nervous in the car.
Sam's foster describes her as sleepy, low key, and very affectionate, loving nothing more than to lick your face when you call her over and tell her you love her. She loves to be reassured that she is loved, and she hasn’t done anything wrong. She loves her snacks at bedtime, snoozing, or lying in the grass on a nice day.
