Meet RUSTY-JJ (ALBANY CALIFORNIA)
Rusty is a 2 year old neutered male (as of April 2023) Catahoula mix in need of a new home. He is up to date on vaccinations, housebroke, would be responsive to a crate though it is not used at this point. He is a typical Catahoula in the leash pulling range. He is focused on things around him but easily checks and softens. He is responsive to owners re-focusing him. He weighs about a lean 80 pounds. He is a tall boy. He is a talker by nature an extrovert type dog and he is a barker in a very high stimulated neighborhood. He really is just alerting and the neighborhood is aggravating that. He is fantastic with a 4 year old in the home and is hyper bonded to this child. Large numbers of children coming and going might be too much for him. We don’t know this for sure it is a guess at this point. He only interacts with the family’s son. He requires a slow introduction to other dogs and is selective in his choice of dog friends. He does go to a dog day care of familiar small groups that have been properly introduced and those are his play dates. All the dogs are his size and we say no to small dogs. He does have prey drive with squirrels and small critters. We say no to cats as well. He is very tenacious in his focus like most Catahoulas. He is not a digger in the yard when left unattended. He has shown no tendencies to go over fences.. even lower ones although we don’t recommend low fences. A bit leash reactive but getting better as owner moved to a new location and so he is sorting a lot of new things out. Owner is working on all of this. He is fantastic in a car and he loves to go. He had been good at the vets but got ill Nov of 22, pneumonia, and has been a little more uneasy since that ongoing doctoring. He is great with a grinder on nail trims. He likes toys, he likes nylabones and will play fetch. Not destructive in the house when left alone. He likes water and likes to swim. This dog has some really nice qualities.
HISTORY: Rusty was 4 months old when the family got him from another rescue. He has been with the same family to date. Reason for rehoming him is: He was good at the original home and neighborhood, other than just normal puppy nonsense and training normalcies. When the family moved this past summer he isn’t adjusting fast nor well in the new highly stimulated environment. It is a busy neighborhood. When he goes to visit a familiar place, with one set of relatives where it is a calmer home environment he reverts back to his normal self. If it weren’t for this main reason the family would not be seeking a new home. They feel he needs a better home than they can give him.
GOOD: Rusty is smart and super trainable. The family is finding a working breed dog and a small child a lot to deal with in a busy life. He is a typical energetic and focused dog of his breed and incredibly athletic and protective. All good Catahoula qualities but not right for this family. In the environment they live in these things are not really to any sensitive dog’s advantage and it keeps Rusty on edge to do his job. He is so happy and stable in the other family member’s environment. He has a really good inner part of him. This dog is a really good dog for the right home. There is more I can share privately but this bio is an overview. We will speak by phone if he interests you.
BAD: Bad would be his vocal reactions and he doesn’t fit with the energy field and the life style this family lives. He doesn’t enjoy the daily life style they have and enjoy. He exhausts them and they exhaust him.. It is an uneasy struggle for all and it isn’t a match.
UGLY: No real ugly for the right person. No bite incidences and the family is very careful and observant of his needs.
