RUGER  – 1 year old, male, neutered, vaccinated and ready for a home

Special Need:  He is 4 weeks out from having his back left leg amputated and is still needs support with stairs, entering vehicles, etc.

Pros: He is great with dogs, cats, men, women, being touched/rolled over, played with. He is potty trained. Does well on a leash.

Cons: He will need kennel training as he whines/barks when kenneled/separated.

Ruger came to us after being hit on the highway and needing emergency amputation of his back left leg and pelvic surgery.  The owner surrendered the dog to our care and we moved him immediately into surgery. Ruger is strong beautiful boy who has recovered quickly and is ready for a new home. He is great people (men and women), dogs and cats, being touched/rolled over, kennel, etc.

He has spent 3 weeks at a medical facility for his rehabilitation where he was a staff favorite.  He entered into a foster home for his final week of rehabilitation and did wonderful, though he did resource guard a specific toy from a young female human. Because of this, we moved him to a new foster that has no children, and he has done well with the change and has shown no signs of resource guarding toys, food, etc.  We have incurred medical and boarding bills of $6000 for Ruger, and while he’s totally worth it, we do need to find him a bully-aware home where he can start to settle in and thrive.

"is Fido available for adoption?"
Please assume that if a dog is listed as 'adoptable' on our Petfinder page we are still accepting applications for that pet. We do our best to keep the page up to date.

"do you adopt out of state?"
We make every effort to find our dogs good homes in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. We do not have the means to ship dogs.

"is Fido good with dogs/older cats/male cats/children/orangutans/vacuums?"
Each animal is different, and our profiles try to address these questions. If you do not find your answer in the pet's profile, please submit an application or inquiry and a volunteer will be happy to speak with you about a particular animal.

"what is the adoption process?"
You submit an application at: https://www.bestfriendsofbaker.org/new-page-3
and then the applications for that animal are reviewed and references are checked. The home that is the best fit is contacted first if there are multiple applicants. The chosen adopter will be contacted (usually by phone) and a meet-and-greet and or home visit is arranged to determine if the adoption will be finalized. If the person passes on the pet, we will contact the next applicant in line.

"how much does it cost?"
Dog adoption fees generally range from $100.00-400.00 depending on how much veterinary care the dog has received. All adoption donations are tax-deductible and donations above the requested fee are appreciated. Every cent from our adoption fees goes toward helping the next animal in need.

"what veterinary care has Fido received?"
Dogs are generally vetted upon intake and receive wormer and vaccines (rabies and a distemper/parvo combination vaccine). If intact and of the appropriate age, they are also spayed or neutered.
