Rosie Bluetick Coonhound & German Shepherd Dog Mix Manhattan, KS

Rosie was born in January of 2020. She was a very skittish puppy, not wanting to go into the yard when trucks passed and she would not go near other people, but loving her senior "big" brother and sister. After she turned one and was fixed the vet wanted to put her on anxiety medication. She was on Fluoxetine daily for over 2 years. I can't say that we noticed a big difference but we kept up the regimen. She hated to be kenneled. We will provide it with her but she would bash against it and scratch the base so much we thought she'd hurt herself, so we adjusted to allowing her to roam freely at night. She takes her patrols very seriously and paces much of the time she's awake. She loves to play fetch, catch and Frisbee most of all - and car rides in the country. She'll go for her Frisbee until she's exhausted. She didn't play much as a puppy but in the last year or two she's been trying to learn from the younger rescues we have, things like tug and chasing her tail. Since she was young she's been very aware of smaller animals, like the family hamster and neighborhood cats. She acts very wildly when any come near the fence and because of her response I could not see her in a home with cats. Her older brother and sister have since passed, and she's been in a home with dogs her age and younger but in the last year or so it's become harder to allow them all to coexist. There have been more than a handful of fights, starting from a variety of things; eating near one another(which we changed), a small treat falling on the ground around her and another dog by accident, not wanting to share toys, and now even play seems to set something off. Most recently her sisters were playing and she was up on the couch, I guess she thought they were getting too rough or too loud, because she got down and tried to correct them but started an all out fight resulting in stitches for herself and the others. Her medication was changed recently to Paroxetine. She does seem happier, more friendly to other people, and more puppy-like since the switch. Unfortunately when trying to reintroduce her to any of the other dogs after the last fight, she starts out being very playful and gets overly excited and switches to not play quickly, even after we've gone to efforts to exhaust her and reintroduce outside of our property. We can't let any of them share space with her without tall, strong barriers. She is a very sweet, loving dog. She takes time to warm up, almost like the more you want to love her the longer it takes. As soon as she feels safe in your presence though she loves endless chest scratches, and she'll play Frisbee with just about anyone. She's been in a women-only household her entire life but she loves the dog sitter(male), and our father when they come to visit. When she wants affection she does have a habit of jumping on you to be held up for a bit of a hug, and she will steal scraps if they're too close to the edge of the counter. She doesn't chew furniture, carpets, etc. She is solidly housebroken and will hold it for extended periods. She does have a somewhat sensitive stomach due to anxiety, I am happy to provide at least 3 bags of her Canidae kibble to anyone who can give her the most stable home to allow time for her stomach to adjust. She will include her crate, escape proof harness, collar, leash, toys, Frisbees, brush, chews, her favorite treats, etc. She loves fish/salmon more than anything in the world. She is currently on a 12 month heartworm shot, that's due again in October. She is up to date on vaccines but due to her anxiety meds-which she has to remain on, she cannot use something like a Seresto collar. Once we have a regular flea/tick medication that will be provided as well. She is an independent dog. She has never tried to escape our picket fence, she doesn't destroy things or dig in the yard, but she does bark a bit, at noises, strangers and she does some demand barking - and if she's spooked while pacing the house she will jump at the other dogs and nip them. She likes to herd people as well, she'll bump against your calves to guide you where she wants you to go. She isn't the biggest fan of walks unless you can take her out in the country. I don't know how she'd do with any small, farm type animals. We have her vet records, puppy photos and and her DNA test information to offer. She would love a larger yard, anywhere she could run and chase her toys. She has never been an outside dog. She will take patience but she's an incredible dog and she deserves so much more than being secluded away from everything. She's only four years old and would be an amazing single pet for someone to love. She is often left to herself for long stretches and doesn't cause any trouble, there's no concerns when leaving her to go to work or on vacation, she just roams and protects the house. Her training is limited to sit and down. She has not been around children much if they come in the house she usually steers clear of them.
