Name: Poppy
Nicknames: Pop, Coffee
Age or DOB: Estimated to be between 4 -5 Years old
Activity Level: Low energy with short bursts of high energy. Mostly even keeled.
Kennel Trained: He is currently in a large collapsible KBC Kennel. He will sometimes challenge you about going in the kennel. Once he is in the kennel, he is fine. He can get mouthy if you try to collar grab to lead him in the kennel, so I have been using a leash to guide him in.
Potty Trained: Yes, but he will mark if you are not watching him.
Behaviors to note: Resource guards’ food and toys from other dogs (but not humans). Jumps on humans/counters. He pulls hard on a leash. Overall, he has loved every human he has met with the exception of two middle aged men. We are not sure what exactly set him off or if he is human selective. Will update more as we learn more about Poppy.
Things I do in my free time: Cuddle, nap, and play! He also loves going for walks. We are currently working on leash manners though as he does pull hard on the leash.
Things I know: Sit and shake
Things I am learning: Wait, stay, and basic manners.
Reaction to new people: He loves people and will jump on them. We are working on the jumping behavior.
Kids: No experience yet.
Dogs: He is non-reactive towards other dogs out on a walk. He has been introduced to my resident dog and, so far, things have gone well. We will update this when we know more about Poppy’s personality with other dogs.
Cats: No experience yet.
Size: 45 -50 pounds
Car rides: Loves them. Even keeled.
Additional Info from foster: Friendly personality traits with bouts of high energy combined with laziness. He will run fast around the yard several times like he is on a racetrack and then take a nap in the grass or on the patio in the sun. He does his business every time he goes outside or goes out on a walk. When he is excited, (ex. getting out of crate or new people are around) he will try and jump on you. I tell him “off” and turn my back. I ask him to sit and then I pet and love up on him. He will be an amazing dog for someone who incorporates basic leadership training in their routine. He has spent almost his whole life in a rural shelter, so he probably never had much leadership training. He is eager to please. He will be easy to train.
Side note: I work from home and Poppy is a dream as an office assistant. He mostly naps while I am working at my desk and occasionally comes up to me to give me a quick cuddle before he goes back to nap. He also self entertains by chasing ball. Out of my 8-hour day, he may be spent 20 minutes playing with a ball and the rest of it napping or giving me quick cuddles. He is quiet and lovable.
