Pete (aka Delgado) Chiweenie Verona, NJ

Pete is one of our Aruba rescues, saved from a bad hoarding situation and transported here to NJ for his shot at a forever home.

As with many dogs coming from that environment, Pete is a timid boy who sincerely wants love, but is afraid and takes a while to warm up to people. He is feeling more and more comfortable every day though, and learning new things all the time. He is extremely food motivated, which makes him easier to train once hes ready. He is food aggressive, which is not surprising, and his foster is feeding him separately to avoid any incident with her other pets. Hes a smart little guy - he figured out how to open the treat box and then handed them out to fosters 3 other dogs!!

He likes his tennis balls and Kong toys and keeps them close in his little pen/corral, making sure everyone knows they are his and no other dog can play with them. But he LOVES playing with fosters other dogs!

When company comes he is insecure and goes into his corral which is his safe space. It took a while for him to allow his foster to pet him and be relaxed. He will sniff and lick new people but tenses when you reach over his head. But Pete is never aggressive with people and NEVER bites when afraid.

Pete is healing and making progress hes making eye contact now and touch therapy has helped him a lot. His forever home should include a fenced in yard (he is currently too afraid to go for a walk on a leash and needs a starter yard to acclimate to outdoors.) He needs a family who will help him grow and become more confident. Hell do well with seniors who are often home a lot, in a quiet setting. Obviously, his next owner needs to be very very patient and go at his pace. Another dog who is non-dominant would go far to help him learn how to be a dog!
