MY AGE: approx. 10 years WEIGHT: approx. 15 lbs.

MY STORY: Panamera is a sweet, 10 year old Yorkie-Poodle breeder release. She weighs approximately 12 pounds and has the softest, curly coat. She does not shed and will need to be groomed every 6-8 weeks. Panny only has a few teeth but has no trouble eating canned food or softened kibble. Up until this point, Panny has spent her life raising litters of puppies in a barn; despite this bleak existence, she loves being around people. She is happiest when she is near us - often napping close by or approaching us for pets and snuggles. Panny gets along well with our resident dogs and is a happy, friendly girl. She actually "smiles" and shows off her shiny teeth!

Initially, Panny did not love being crated (at least not with the door closed) -- given her life before, you really can't blame her. We did use a crate to keep her safe for the first few days, but soon discovered that her main activity is napping. Now when we leave the house she is in a tiled room with a soft bed inside her crate and the crate door left open; we often find her sleeping in the same position when we return. We've been working hard at making her crate a safe place and she now frequently chooses to nap and relax inside it throughout the day.

Panny is not destructive and has not chewed inappropriately. We have many house plants and are not "puppy proofed" but she has shown no interest in anything other than blankets and dog beds. Once housetrained, she could certainly have the run of the house without issue. Her first several days with us she did a lot of pacing and circling (typical of dogs that have been in a puppy mill) and was simply unsure what she should do with herself. She still has moments of unrest, but has already come so far. She is typically lying down, either next to us, or from a vantage point that allows her to see what we are doing.

We have three resident dogs and have had a number of foster dogs; never has one slept in our bed. Until Panny. We crated her the first two nights, but she was upset -- she eventually settled down and fell asleep, but it was not easy for her. The next night she slept in a dog bed on our bedroom floor; this was better, but she did pace some before settling in. The third night, we decided to put her in our bed. She immediately curled up, making sure she was touching both of us, let out a deep sigh and fell asleep. She slept soundly until morning and has spent nights with us since. After the conditions of her past 10 years, we think that she deserves to rest wherever she feels the safest. She isn't a "burrower" and sleeps on top of the comforter.

Panny is catching on to housetraining quickly -- I would say she is currently 90%. She knows to go potty outside and comes to us quickly for her slice of hot dog after she goes. She doesn't yet fully understand that inside is NOT for pottying, but she's smart. Her new family will need to continue working with her on this and be patient with her in a new environment.

Like many ladies of a certain age, Panny is a little hard of hearing. This doesn't negatively affect her, but we always wake her up gently and try to make sure she knows where we are - there have been times we hear her searching for us, but she isn't able to hear us calling to her. Everything about being in a house is new to her; all of the sounds, smells and routines are unfamiliar. She will need continued help learning to walk on a leash, navigate stairs and pass through doorways. These things are often scary for dogs like Panny but will change with time, patience and love.

Panny does have a heart murmur.
