Meet Onyx
Onyx was pulled from our local animal control agency. She was an owner surrender in April 2024 with a litter of puppies.
With a guesstimated birthday in April 2020, Onyx weighed about 40 lb at her vet exam in July 2024. She needs to add a few pounds, but is a small shepherd so shouldn't be more than 50 lb at her adult weight.
Onyx is good with polite dogs and doesn't mind the cats in her foster home. She is leash savvy and knows "sit". She's comfy in a 42" crate and will sleep all night.
Onyx is very sensitive to atmosphere and is eager to please. She does some submissive peeing, so her new family should be aware she needs encouragement rather than reprimands.
Onyx enjoys car riding with her people, although she's nervous in new situations. She responds well to a confident handler. She will vocalize in the early days as she adjusts to her new environment and learns to trust her people will return.
Onyx doesn't signal when she needs to go out, so should be on a regular schedule of potty breaks and walks. We recommend the first day after adoption her new family take her out for potty breaks every hour - as simple as walking a few feet into the yard to the spot you choose and telling her to "go potty" or the directive of your choice, then giving her a few minutes before returning to the house. Have a treat to give her when you get inside to reward her. Carrying a treat with you might distract her from the business at hand :) The second day after adoption give her potty breaks every other hour. There should be some longer walks mixed in to give her exercise.
----------------------------------------
Whether dogs / puppies come in as strays or owner surrenders, we make our best guess as to birthdate and breed.
If adopted into a home with other animals, particularly cats, your new pet should be crated or secured when you're not available to supervise to insure a harmonious relationship.
For adult dogs, our adoption fee covers a general wellness exam, a standard canine vaccine, a rabies vaccine, deworming, a current heartworm test, and are on a monthly heartworm prevention.
For puppies over the age of 14 weeks, our adoption fee covers a general wellness exam, deworming, and the first 3 puppy vaccines. If the puppy is still in our care at 16 weeks, we will also provide the rabies vaccine.
If you are adopting an intact dog, a refundable spay/neuter deposit is required, and a vet reference may be required.
Scheduled Meet & Greets occur on Saturdays in our Adoption Center at Waggin' Tail Resale (220 Joyceton Church Road) in Lenoir between 10am & 3:30pm. Additional times may be available depending on schedules of Adoption Counselors and Foster Parents. To make an appointment, send an e-mail to: info@foothillscaninerescue.org. We will respond within 24-48 hours M-F.
