Meet Nugget

9/3-
Hi! My name is Nugget. My foster family thinks I’m a 3ish year old Chihuahua mix.

A couple of years ago, I was in a home and with a family I thought I would spend my life with. Sadly, I was taken to a shelter not long afterwards, because a small child I was living with too rough with me and I was not sure how to respond to tell them to stop. The shelter told me I couldn’t be there for long or I’d be euthanized. Not sure what that meant, but it sounded serious…

So the wonderful people at All Creatures Big and Small graciously took me in and gave me a second chance.

I’ve been in my foster home for a couple of years now, and as much as I love my foster family, I don’t know why I have not been picked for my forever home yet…I was told there was some interest in me, but haven’t been able to met my new family yet.

I am a good boy. I’m crate trained and fully potty trained. Best part about me, is even though I’m a boy, I’m not a humper and I don’t mark my territory. I’d rather take naps and snuggle with my people.

My foster mom has had me experience new things, that at first were very scary, but now I realize they aren’t so bad. I tolerate loud noises like the vacuum cleaner, hair driers, fire trucks flying by the house, and fireworks

Even though baths aren’t my favorite, I love that it leads to the warm snuggles wrapped up in a towel next to my favorite person.

I’m working at trusting people since my last home made me question if I am loved, and that I’d be assured that I’d be safe. I’d like a home with older children who can respect my boundaries and be nice to me.

I love my dog friend here where I’ve been living with. I love to snuggle near her and I’m sure once I get to know my new family, I’d snuggle with all of them too. I also love to take my foster sister’s toys when she is playing with them. If they look fun, I want to see it for myself.

I’ve made so much progress with my past of resource guarding, and will let my foster parents take anything they want or need from me now that I know I’m in a safe space.

I love my cat friends. They are so much fun to chase, but I would not hurt them. Sometimes they swat at me, but I just want to play.

I will love you forever and be your best couch companion, and love to snuggle on or under a good warm blanket. I am thankful for the time and energy my foster parents have put into me, but if you could please help me find my forever home I can truly show them how special and loving I am.

Nugget is a chihuahua Jack Russell mix that came to us needing a little help with his training since he was acting out with some very negative attention seeking behaviors. We weren't going to give up on him as his previous owners did when they took him to a shelter to be euthanized at just 10 months old when he was showing signs of a high play drive and becoming nippy to elicit attention the only way he knew how. It has been a long process including a 2 week stay and train program at click to zen to lay down a foundation for him of positive reinforcement training and basic manners. He has been responding very well to his training but it needs to continue once he is placed into a new foster to adopt home. This little 10# Jack Russel terrier mix is super smart and he learns very quickly so we think he can continue to be taught new tricks and manners as he continues to grow into such a good boy. His foster mom wrote the following bio in hopes that we can find Nugget a great new foster to adopt home. Please be sure to read all about him before applying since he is needing a specific type of forever home?
Nugget has been hard at work after his two week long board and train. He has been getting consistent, daily (and usually nightly during the work week) brief training sessions from his foster mom.
Nugget has come a long way and is working hard along side his foster mom to learn all the world has to offer. From living in a rural area, to learning all of the scary sounds in the city. Nugget’s foster mom is working on desensitizing him with many different sounds every day. He has learned to not be scared of the hair dryer, food processor, kitchen Aid mixer, and now and working on the vacuum.
They have been working every night, refreshing on the basics he learned at his board and train like place, settle (lay down), come, and leave it.
As well as slowly teaching him to sit, heal, and to be more tolerable towards the cats, and to be respectful towards his larger foster dog sister. Nugget enjoys playing with other dogs he knows and is comfortable with, but does not like to share his toys. So he may be best in an only dog home, or at least separated/crated when left by himself as to not be overstimulated, and have time to himself to decompress.
Nugget has a high prey drive, and will chase anything running fast. So he would do best in a home without any cats, a fenced in yard, or if no fenced in yard, to have him securely leashed when walked. Due to his past history with children, and his tendency towards hyperactivity, he would do best in a home with older children, and adults.
He is very well crate trained and does not mess in his crate, and is working very well at potty training.
In the beginning, Nugget had had difficulty socializing with new humans and animal. It takes him a little extra time to meet someone in order to start to feel comfortable with them. When staying with his foster family, Nugget has slowly been able to be introduced to some new people inside and outside of the home, and is improving his social skills.
He does love to play with his toys with his humans, but does not like to share with other animals. He likes to keep his bones to himself, and may feel intimidated if someone tried taking it from him, but is working on “leave it” means it’s okay to give up our bone and we will be rewarded.
Nugget loves to cuddle next to his human, or on top of them if he can. He truly loves and clings to his one human and looks to them for reassurance, as well as may become a little protective over them, so his human will have to keep up with consistent training to reinforce his positive behaviors.
Nugget will need continued training following his adoption to be successful and continue positively moving forward. Nugget would love to learn with you!
