Meet Nero
A heart of gold is hiding behind the worn exterior. Dear Nero has had a rough past. His previous home consisted of a rough building in the woods above the Williamsport-Jersey Shore area. When authorities became aware that the home was in unsavory living conditions, his owners left and abandoned him. Our Humane Officer was able to rescue him in late February. He had been spending the cold winter days and nights fending for himself out in the woods.
As you may suspect, Nero was a tough bird at first. We are not sure what the boisterous five-year-old experienced in his previous life, but we know that he came in worn, hairless in spots, and unmannered. He had also been sprayed by a skunk. What a mess! The shelter was a distinct change in lifestyle for him and boy was he confused.
You should see him now! It did not take long before the care and affection of the shelter staff and volunteers began to melt Nero's heart. His hair grew back, his "lost" expression disappeared, and in its place, an active ham of a pooch emerged (who just simply LOVES his tennis balls). In fact, our volunteers threw the dogs an indoor pool party complete with tennis balls recently and you should have seen how happy Nero's face was!
Nero's favorite volunteer describes him as, "a fun-loving, boisterous lug who doesn't realize how strong he is. He is a champ at playing fetch and would most likely play all day long if he could." She also went on to describe how he is still working on his "manners," such as jumping and pulling on the leash. Already, this smart gentleman has learned sit, down, and shake. He can't wait to show you how quickly he can learn. Obedience training and a stable home environment will help him learn the basics that were not taught to him as a young pup.
Nero has made great strides here at the SPCA and we are all so happy for him. Next step: scoring that perfect forever home! Until that day comes, Nero is welcome to call the Lycoming County SPCA home.
Are Nero's sweet face and happy smile tugging at your heartstrings? He would love to have a meet and greet (especially if a walk and a tennis ball is involved). Nero is ready and waiting in Kennel 74.
