Meet Merrick
Date of birth: 11/2/2014
11/20/2019: Merrick is an adorable 5 year old Bull Terrier/Heeler/Lab mix. He’s got a great smile and cute markings. Merrick is very loving and silly and lots of fun. He's extremely playful and he loves, loves, loves to play fetch! Be sure to watch his video! All he really asks for in life is a fenced yard and someone to play fetch-- and we'll send him home with a bag of tennis balls! Merrick also likes the water-- he loves splashing in a kiddie pool or exploring a creek. He walks extremely well on a leash and loves to go to hiking at parks and out for long walks.
Merrick is an athletic guy and his playing style is pretty vigorous. It’s all in good fun and he’s never been aggressive with people, but he does play hard! He'd do best in a home with someone who is pretty dog savvy and experienced and enjoys an active dog. He would not be a good match for young children or someone who's not comfortable with that type of physical play, or someone who’s never had a dog. Once he's had his playtime and exercise, he calms down very nicely. Merrick does need a home without other dogs or cats.
He is a smart guy and food motivated. He’s had obedience training class and he enjoys learning.
Sadly, Merrick had a very rough time before coming to us. He was about 5 months old and he had an abscess on the left side of his face that went untreated for months and grew to a horrible size. The one photo shows what he looked like at that time. His family had abandoned him at a garage sale and the homeowners brought him to us. Merrick needed surgery to drain the abscess. Unfortunately, due to the size and length of time it was there, Merrick’s jaw hadn't grown properly on that side. Luckily, as he's grown older his face has evened out quite a bit. He's really made a fantastic recovery!
Merrick weighs 70 lbs. He’s been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for heartworms. He’s a fun guy and a sweetie and he deserves the best! He's been with us for a very long time.
MORE ON ADOPTING OUR DOGS...
Please visit our web site at HSGKC.ORG for more information about our adoption process, our adoption fees and all that's included, and for a pet adoption application.
> An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements. We encourage you to fill out an online adoption application and submit it before you come to see us. This helps us process your application more quickly and we can schedule an appointment for you to come in so that our small staff can serve you best. If you decide you'd like to adopt one of the pets you meet, we reserve the pet for you but we generally don't send the pet home with you that day. We’ll instead schedule a pick up date and time that’s convenient for you.
> Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home. All of our dogs & puppies have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks, tested for heartworms (7 mo. and over), and are on monthly heartworm preventative. Puppies who are too young to receive all the necessary puppy boosters and/or first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge. You will also receive a leash, collar, coupons for pet supplies and services, toys, and educational materials. And we'll give your dog a bath before he or she goes home!
> Please note that we prefer and may require a fenced yard for many of our dogs. Exceptions are made on an individual basis depending on the dog's needs, the person's dog experience, the dog's and person's activity levels, home environment and other factors.
Thank you for searching for a shelter pet!
