Meet Martha

Martha / Female / Approx. 2 years/ Weight 69lbs / Lab x Shepherd/Good With Dogs / Untested With Kids / Untested With Cats / From Tennessee/ Fostered in Toronto

Meet Martha! Martha's foster describes her as a sweet girl who loves to cuddle. Martha came to us from our partner rescue in Tennessee where she grew up with her littermates. She loves playing with her humans, chew toys, and puzzle games! Martha is a big softie and would be the perfect companion to stay cozy and watch Netflix with this winter.

Martha likes following her foster around like a shadow and seeks comfort and reassurance from him. She also likes meeting people. She prefers to meet them outdoors and is a bit fearful/nervous indoors when new people come into her space. While she hasn’t met any children, her sweet and gentle disposition lead us to believe that she would do well with dog savvy children who are old enough to understand and respect her boundaries.

Martha is still learning to feel safe and adapt to her new environment - where she is making so much progress every day! She is obsessed with food and treats. Combined with her strong desire to please her family, she will be easy to train. Now she is perfecting her recall and even learning to shake a paw! Martha enjoys enrichment activities such as games, puzzles, and learning new tricks which help her use energy while feeling safe in a familiar setting.

Martha is still building confidence with loud noises and busy areas, so patience with training will be needed in helping her reach her potential. She is both curious and nervous meeting other dogs, often giving others a potential sniff while keeping her distance. However after a meeting or two, she has shown to make best friends with many of the dogs in her current neighborhood! Careful and measured introductions to other dogs will be helpful as she builds confidence and learns to play more with other dogs. The same goes for humans. Martha can be especially shy and for people visiting her home. Slow instructions are crucial and she does best with humans who give her space and let her come to them. She usually just needs some time and patience.

Martha is working on getting her basics down. She is learning to walk on a leash, and pee outside. She sleeps on a bed next to her foster, and is trusted with free reign of the housel. This very good girl has been left alone up to 4 hours without issue.

Martha's ideal home would be outside the busy city centre and have a fenced in yard for her to run around in. She would benefit from a patience family and a quiet home where she can feel secure and let her lovely personality shine. She bonds with people quickly, loves love, and would be happy living wherever her person is. Martha lived with another dog prior to coming into our care and would likely do well with a resident dog, and it may even help build her confidence. We would not recommend cats due to her personality.

Looking for a mellowed out couch buddy? If you have a little patience and are willing to help this girl come out of her shell, you just may have a best friend for life in Martha!
