Meet MACO~ADOPTED!!

UPDATE: Mar 1st, 2012. YAHOOOOOO.....Maco is officially adopted by his foster mom. Congrats to all!!!

FEB 10TH, 2012. MACO HAS AN ADOPTION PENDING WITH HIS FOSTER HOME. MORE NEWS TO FOLLOW SOON!

Maco is doing well in Kamloops and responding great to clicker training. We are still keeping him fairly quiet until he is fully healed. We are still unsure what his injuries are at this point as the lameness comes and goes. More tests need to be done.

Oct 19th, 2011. Maco is heading to an experienced foster home in Kamloops where he will remain for several months. Maco came to us limping and favouring his left front leg. X-Rays confirmed Maco has a (non serious) soft tissue injury that needs some time and TLC to heal. Maco is on a raw diet now and will continue on raw as long as needed. We will be updating Maco's progress so please keep checking back here.

Maco is a 15 month old Belgian Shepherd Malinois. He weighs approx 65 lbs and stands 25" at the withers. Maro would love a job to do! His foster mom is a dog trainer and says he would love to track and Search And Rescue would be right up his alley. Maco will be adopted as a family member first and a working dog second. He wants to be with his people and tries to please at every chance. Maco does well with submissive dogs but is not too fond of dogs that push him. He will defend himself in needed so at this point we are looking for a home with no other dogs or one that has a more passive dog. The Malinois needs lots of training, exercise and structure in order to be their best. Only applicants with knowledge of the breed that are committed to full-filling his needs will be considered for his adoption. A full assessment report will supplied to any potential applicants that are being considered for his adoption.

A little about the breed:

In Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and other European countries, as well as in the United States, Canada and Australia, the Malinois is bred primarily as a working dog for personal protection, detection, police work, search and rescue, and sport work (Belgian Ring, Schutzhund, French Ring, Mondio Ring).

Well-raised and trained Malinois are usually active, friendly, protective and hard-working. Many have excessively high prey drive. Some may be excessively exuberant or playful, especially when young. They can be destructive or develop neurotic behaviors if not provided enough stimulation and exercise. These are large, strong dogs that require consistent obedience training, and Malinois enjoy being challenged with new tasks. They are known as being very easy to obedience train, due to their high drive for rewards.

Malinois can compete in dog agility trials, obedience, showmanship, flyball, tracking, and herding events, and are one of the most popular breeds used in protection sports such as schutzhund, French Ring, and Mondio Ring. In America, herding instincts can be measured at noncompetitive herding tests. Belgian Shepherds exhibiting basic herding instincts can then be trained to compete in herding trials.
