Meet Mable

Meet Mable. Mable is believed to be either a Shar-pei or chow mixed with a beagle. I just can't tell. Mable came to us late winter of 2022. After living for over a year since the age of 3 months, when she was adopted from the shelter as an outdoors dog at the end of a chain. Not even a fence but a freaking chain. Can you imagine! 3-month-old puppy at the end of a chain? I hurt just thinking of this. And ALWAYS ALONE AND ISOLATED. Growing up like this.

The family decided to surrender Mabel to the same shelter where they originally adopted her and get a new puppy. ???

Their reasoning for keeping Mable as an outdoor dog, she would not potty train. Their reason for surrendering her, she's "aggressive." ??

When Mable was surrendered she displayed many fearful reactive behaviors toward people and humans. In addition, she required cherry eye and inverted eyelid corrective surgery, of which she had done a total of 4 different times/surgeries as it was a severe case due to neglect for far too long. But each time, the outcome. e was unknown until she healed. 4th time worked and gave her a nice facelift, allowing her ability to see clearly without sagging skin. This allowed a new view of life.

Since her medical took a year to accomplish, each surgery improved her eyelid issue more, but not completely. This gave us time without the added pressure of placing her for adoption. Not because of us but because people saw her and would fall in love quickly. Helping Mable's physical health needs allowed us the time to help heal her mind and heart. Allowed her to learn and trust. Mable loves easy. She is motivated and gives her full heart completely if given the time.

We focused on exposure. Introducing her to as many humans as possible willing to join her rehab recovery and having her join the pack at the Sanctuary. Then and only then is when she truly learns to be a dog. Toys alone made her so happy. She learned to play in doggie play groups. Mable was never aggressive she just was unsure. She still can be shy but is willing. She lacked understanding and communication with body language. She lacked socialisation. She missed out on so much being forced to live outside on a chain without any interaction with anyone.

We focus on just this for the first 6-8 months. While implementing basic obedience and allowing her to follow other dogs. Learning and mimicking their behaviors. Learning proper doggie-adequate reading and communicating through body language. Mabel is sweet. She is active. She can be shy, but we have learned that if she's with 2 or more dogs, she is comfortable and happy. She allows her guard down and just follows the other dog's lead. Mable loves to play. She is a silly ornery and gets easily lost in the pack. She just wants to fit in. Mable walks excellently on a leash. Her recall is great, but because of her history off-leash ever, it is not something we encourage. A fence in the yard is preferred. Apartment living would be ok as long as she is exercised daily. Snuggling and cuddling is required. She thrives with human and dog interaction. Affection and physical touch are needed. Mable is a follower-the-flow kinda girl. Mable could never be an only pet. We tried but her energy and insecurity were too much. Mable needs a pack. A confident social balance, outgoing, active pack, and human to continue what we started. Mable absolutely can be a couch potato when properly exercised physically and mentally. Mable is house and crate-trained, but keep in mind stress can cause her to need frequent potty breaks. In a crate, she feels secure, so we allow her one.

Mable is house and crate-trained and walks great on a leash. Her recall is great too. Mable is up to date on 1 or 3 years of all age-appropriate core vaccines including lepto, and corona, as well as the rabies vaccine, dewormed, fecal tested negative, microchipped with free lifetime registration, and unlimited updated info ability at no additional fee, spay/neutered, heartworm lyme tested negative within 6 months and current on monthly heartworm flea/tick prevention year round.

Out-of-state adopters are welcome at the adopter's expense. We do NOT ship, and a minimum of 2 meet and greet is required before adoption unless you are a previous adopter.

Previous adopters of AHRs have the first choice and are not expected to pay another adoption fee again. Donation of their choice is welcomed.

Training is an ongoing process that needs to be worked on daily. New issues and opportunities arise daily that have to be addressed and or rewarded. Continued training is a purity setting them up for success.
