Meet Leo - Maremma Mix - Juvenile - Cuddler & Snuggler

Leo is a Maremma Anatolian Shepherd who was surrendered to a shelter because his breeder could not sell them. Maremma's are an Italian Sheep dog, similar to Great Pyrenees. He came to us very shy, but has done great gaining confidence in his foster home with other dogs. He has learned to walk on a leash, goes for walks, and knows basic commands. He makes frequent trips to Lowes, where his fosters hand out lots of cookies to strangers, so he learns to not be afraid of new people. He is doing great! He is still a little shy and would do best in a household with another dog as a friend and romp buddy. Leo would benefit from being in a quiet household. He does well with structure and likes his crate with a soft bed to snuggle with. He does not have a full coat like a Great Pyrenees, so he enjoys wearing sweaters, and snuggling and cuddling.

We require obedience training for all newly adopted pyrs less than a year old, to help you create a special bond with you and your new friend, and so you have a well behaved canine. Great Pyrenees are willing to learn, but are not as eager to comply with commands as much as other breeds. They are bred to be independent thinkers. Applicants must be over 25, own their own home and all children in household must be over 6 years old. Your resident pets must be up to date on vaccines, sterilized, you must have a good history of vet care for them for the past two years, and you must have used heartworm preventative year round for your dogs and be able to provide proof of purchase for two years too.

Leo will be placed as an inside pet with outside privileges. You MUST have a securely fenced yard accessible from your home. Invisible fencing does not work with this breed and they will take the shock for the freedom. Great Pyrenees are bred to roam and will create their own territory if not secured, which can led to them being lost, hit by vehicles or shot by people who see them as a threat. The breed is not a good off leash dog, and cannot be trusted to not run away. A Great Pyrenees off leash is a " DisAPyr."

We do not place dogs under age 2 with resident dogs of the same sex. As Great Pyrenees mature, they can become more dominant with dogs of the same sex in the household. Leo is fine with non-dominant neutered male dogs. The resident dog's personality is also taken into consideration too.

Male puppies come with a neuter requirement to be neutered between 18 and 24 months of age., Neutering giant breed dogs too young can lead to osteosarcoma and joint issues for them later in life. By allowing them to benefit from their hormones, we hope to extend the life of the dog as long as possible. Proof of neutering is required, and $100 of the adoption fee will be returned with proof of sterilization.

If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please complete the appropriate application on our website, www.igpr.org under the Adopt tab.

All of our dogs marked as needing foster homes are also available for adoption. If a dog is listed on this site, it is available. No need to contact us to see if it is, We do require you complete the adoption application prior to meeting a dog.

We also offer a foster to adopt program. You foster the dog, and have first right of refusal on them if an approved application is submitted for them.

In fostering a dog, the dog comes to you fully vetted. and groomed. You provide good quality food, grooming, and we provide the heartworm preventative and medical care, if needed* .(*Based on approval from IGPR.)

If you are adopting, we cannot guarantee your dog will be groomed prior to you taking them home. We do offer a two week trial period, in which either party, has the right to cancel the adoption. A $100 non refundable deposit is required prior to you taking the dog. Any veterinary expenses you incur during the trial period is your responsibility, if you do not notify us prior to a vet visit that the dog needs veterinary care. You may request the dog you are adopting be groomed at your expense, prior to picking them up. This can delay the trial period with the dog based on the availability of getting the dog an appointment with a groomer.

Adoption fee: $500
