Lars is a sweet easy-going guy that had a rough start in life. He is currently around 5 months old (as of 8/19/20). His main goals are putting on a little extra weight and living his best puppy life. He likes to chew on toys and snuggle up for naps. He is doing really well with potty training although he isn’t perfect. He doesn’t know how to tell us he must go so it’s up to us to bring him out frequently. He is great in a car and typically falls asleep a few minutes into the drive.
He has been on leashed walks and has done well. He is unsure of bicycles but wants to say hello to everyone that walks by him. He stays motivated by wanting to be near our resident dog. Without a confident dog to follow he has a hard time staying focused on walking in a straight line. He also seems nervous and gets scared by loud cars that pass by him. He would benefit from having a doggy sibling to show him that the world isn’t a scary place.
He used to whine a little when going in his crate, but he had learned the routine in his foster home. A small treat at bedtime and he will typically go to sleep without making any noise. He tires quickly on his walks and at this point doesn’t seem to have a very high energy level.
We are working with him on sit but he hasn’t quite mastered the command yet. He has very big paws and we suspect he could get very large so it will be important that he gets lots of education on how to behave while he is little, like learning not to jump on people or chew on things he isn’t supposed to.
He has been friendly and social with all the dogs that he has met. He did well when he met a cat, but he hasn’t spent a lot of time around them. He made friends with some kids recently and he does well. He still has a rough puppy play style that should be monitored while with children.
He is a big eater and gets 3 cups a day of his current puppy food based on the recommendations for his size and age on the package. He will need a family that understands that big dogs have big appetites.
He is a great dog that would make a wonderful addition to any home.
Here is what we know: Lars & his sister, Sigrit, were found as strays in Dallas, TX. They were extremely malnourished, emaciated, and both had severe cases of mange. Unfortunately, Sigrit passed away shorty after being rescued. As you can see, Lars' skin condition has improved greatly and has begun putting on weight. He has come so far already!
