Meet Keanu

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION!
"Keanu" (fka Hershey) Crockett, CA 94525
Around 2-3 years old, approx 45lbs.

This handsome young boy has been in foster for a few months whilst undergoing some medical evaluation, and is now on a healthy medical-(very low) maintenance schedule and ready for adoption!
Notes from his foster Mom:

My first thought was that Keanu is a picky eater but after watching him for awhile I think he is likey just a candidate for free feeding. When he's hungry he eats, when he's not hungry he can be encouraged to eat if you offer something enticing like cheese or hamburger. No signs of food guarding though if another dog is eating he will definitely let you know he wants some too.

He does not get on furniture at all. Has a cushy dog bed he loves and a wire kennel he sleeps in. As long as you are in the room that's where he wants to be.

He's easily handled on all parts of the body, though when it comes to having his nails clipped, he will wriggle and try to squirm away.
He likes to expose his belly for a scratch when trying to gain favor.
I've never tried to hug him but he manages well at the vet being held.
He likes but perhaps not loves being brushed.
He loves to go out on a leash. Sits to have his leash put on. Waits patiently for it to be removed.
Not very interested in toys and does not guard. Will however take a toy away from another dog.
He can be food-lured into the crate. Happy to sleep there at night. May question day time use by resisting going in.

In terms of commands/cues he knows: Excellent "Sit". Good "Down" using spoken "down" and hand gesture---reads gesture more. Excellent "Outside". Excellent "No." Quick learner, though "Down & Stay" is not in his current scope. He's a bit antsy.

When taken in the car: Initially cries then calms down. Must be lifted into the car. I think he could learn to jump in if he was incentivized by a nice walk or treats.

Keanu is curious and friendly around strangers. He can be shy though so I would be cautious with him around children because he has responded defensively when afraid.
He's interested in other dogs. Excited by little dogs, perhaps viewing them as prey. No fear of large dogs.

He is completely 100% housebroken. Never had an accident or marked inside.
He can be an ppportunistic chewer: will, if bored, grab a sock or shoe if available and chew. Has never destroyed anything however.

Keanu is a relentless digger if he senses a rodent underground in the yard.

Fearful of loud noises. Though, fireworks seem ok if doors/windows are shut and he's feeling secure inside. He doesn't panic.

Is protective in the home and yard and will bark if someone is outside or a delivery comes to the door. Will bark at the neighbors if they are out in their yard but will come when called.

I think Keanu would be best suited for a 1-2 person family who is willing and interested in spending a lot of time with him. He is very affectionate, loves to please and generally just wants to be near his human all the time. He has lots of energy and would enjoy long walks but is also happy to rest at your feet for hours on end. He is a wonderful companion but needs attention and consistent accountability. I mention consistency because he does have a strong personality and will test you (as many Asian dogs will do!).

Keanu does not seem to read signals from other dogs well and will lick and nip and bite them and when pushed will fight and not back down. He is not a good candidate for a dog park with unfamiliar animals. It may be that he should be the only dog in the home but I know he enjoys the company of other dogs. I think he just doesn't know how to act and that creates problems. With awareness and proper training this might be resolved. He does show jealousy of other dogs by pushing and inserting himself between you and the other dog.

(Keanu did have some diarrhea issues at the start and was finding it difficult to put on weight so with vet testing carried out, it was determined that a regular dose of probiotics powders sorts his issues out very well indeed. The powders cost about $50 every couple of months).
