Meet Karen *Please read description carefully*
Please email mindy@houndsong.com if you complete an application for Karen. We are having some technology issues with our application system.
11/25/23 Update: Karen has come a long way in her foster home. She is loving being part of a pack and playing with the other dogs. She is also really loving cuddles and snuggling in bed on a cold night is her favorite pastime! Karen is showing that when she feels safe and her home is predictable, she becomes the beagle we all know she wants to be. She is more confident in the yard and is slowly becoming more interested in going for walks because she sees how excited all the other beagles in her house get when it is walking time! With the right family and environment, we know Karen will thrive!!
We have a special case with this little beagle girl we call Karen. Karen was running as a stray for a long time. We were able to live trap her finally. She was absolutely petrified and could not be easily handled or touched. She initially avoided other dogs.
We took her to one of our wonderful, experienced foster families and she has started to make a turn around. She is comfortable with the family, their home and their dogs. She is constantly trying to get the dogs to play with her. Vet says she is about 13 - 14 months.
She still gets scared of loud noises and sudden movements but she can be picked up by someone she trusts as long as it is slow and gentle. This will likely take time when she moves to her adoptive home.
She loves to cuddle and sleep in bed. She will sit on your lap and like to hang out with the other dogs. She is not destructive at all. She is a mix and doesn’t howl but she barks. Barks too much to live in an apartment or condo. When she wants to play she makes a noise that could be confused for a growl but based on her behavior it is not aggressive. That said she sounds like a honey badger which has become her nickname.
Karen gets nervous if she is outside. She is a happier little dog inside and recently started going out onto the patio but doesn’t like to go into the yard and will not go on a walk.
If you keep her on a strict schedule you can avoid accidents in the house. She is made to go out in the back yard on a leash to make sure she goes potty. She will only go in the backyard and only on one side. The rest is too scary still. She is getting better each day.
In any new situation, she is definitely a flight risk. She will not be great with young kids because she can get snappy if scared but with awareness of her fears and consistency, the foster family is not having issues. She can’t tolerate any over the head movement or grabbing. Very food motivated so she is given a treat when the leash is put on.
Karen needs a home with unlimited patience and commitment to continue to help her overcome her issues. Honestly, some may not be overcome, especially the issue with being outside.
If you think you might be the family for Karen, please contact HoundSong Rescue. We are happy to answer questions.
