Jack - In Foster Shih Tzu Mix Jefferson, LA

Meet Jack! This little guy came in stray to JPAWS. Our dog trainer was at the shelter looking for dogs for us to pull to bring to Jefferson Feed. His teeth were so pretty, JPAWS estimated him to be about 2 years old. So she pulled him and brought him right on over. He looked so rough, our Programs Director just couldn't let him sit like that and went to shaving all his hair off. She should definitely stick to her day job, because that was a rough grooming job but all she cared about that the mats were gone and he could see!

After a vet exam, our vet was thinking he was about 10-12 years old. Shih Tzu's are known for having dry eyes and we brought him to an eye specialist and he aged him at 9 years old based on his eyes. The great news is that we are thinking he's closer to 9 or younger because this boy LOVES to play! He will play tug of war with a toy or your t-shirt, he will steal your iPad if you're not looking and he loves rolling around in the grass living his best life. He still has so much spunk and love to give.

He's currently in foster with one of our amazing volunteers, Betty. She's been fostering him for 3 months or so to get him healthy and in his best shape. She bathes him pretty regularly so his hair is all grown in and he's finally on a grooming schedule. Our eye specialist recommending putting Optimmune in his eyes every night before bed to keep his eyes hydrated. It's pretty common for the breed. It's about $65 for a tube through Chewy. He just started on the eyes meds on 8/8/24 so we aren't sure how long 1 tube will last but we are keeping track of that. We will definitely give 2 brand new tubes of the medicine with his adoption.
