7/31/24-Day Three with Honey Bee. My dogs want to play with her SO bad, but Honey is a mature lady who wants nothing to do with child's play. She's very polite and enjoys their company, but she would like them to keep their "ruff" housing to themselves. She could care less about the cats at home. She's done fantastic with crate training and actually enjoys going in her crate at bedtime. Last night, Honey & I sat on the front lawn for some neighborhood exposure! Lawn mowers, cars, kids on bikes, other dogs & other people were all in the general area. Although she was nervous at first, she finally calmed down after 15 minutes. Eventually we'll extend the length of these exposure sessions & change the scenery, but this is a step in the right direction for now. She also has a spa day scheduled after we get back from vacation.
7/28/24-Honey is all checked in! She moved to a new foster home to get more exposure to different people, different dogs & life outside the breeder. She jumped over my baby gate and snuck into my kitchen, so she's currently just tethered next to me. She's doing good so far! Definitely nervous, but she jumped over the gate to get to me twice. She didn't even hesitate to come into my house at drop-off. She walked right in vs the last breeder release foster dog that I had to physically carry in & out of the doorways for the first week I had him. She’s a very calm, mellow girl.
7/5/24-Honey has had an amazing couple days. All went well with Fourth of July! Kept dogs in and played Mozart to keep calm. I got to pet Honey for a long time including full-body. She laid her head and seemed to actually enjoy being touched that length of time. Has started grabbing my slippers and carrying them around the house. Hanging with other dogs & following me. I've realized key for her is that she does not want to feel that anyone is chasing her. She has much more confidence! We can’t believe this sweet girl has not found her home yet.
6/6/24-Honey now sleeps on the floor next to my bed almost every night. She typically quietly sleeps every night. When I get home from work she comes out to “Go Outside Go Potty” and runs right out the door into my fenced yard. When it’s time to come in, I hardly ever have to grab her lead anymore- she’ll usually run right inside when I step outside and tell her it’s “time to come in the house”. She prefers to eat outside and she no longer runs from me when I bring her bowl of warmed-up wet food mixed with kibble and water, although she does prefer I set it down several feet away from her. Once I walk away, she eats everything right away. Still skittish, but making good progress.
5/30/24-Honey slept on the floor next to me all night, finally got her to eat with pain meds this morning when I took off her cone, then she easily let me put cone back on. She’s resting quietly and I’m heading to work. Honey is a doll and this is a privilege to learn from her. She is now ready to go home!
5/29/24-Honey is back from her spay today & good news: her surgery went well, no heart murmur heard & the 2 little lumps were not concerning & didn’t need removed. She is now resting quietly inside. She did not feel like eating yet but that is normal due to the anesthesia. I’m keeping her cone on, which is not making her happy. Poor baby! Honey rides well in the car. She is becoming more confident! She still is skittish and will not yet come to me, but she smiles frequently and will sometimes sleep on the floor next to my bed, but it has to be her idea. For the most part you don’t know that she is there as she is a quiet observer type right now. We think Honey would do best with a quieter home without lots of kids running in & out as she still is a flight risk when scared. With patience & time & love Honey will learn to live a normal life.
5/24/24-Incredible progress this week. A new sight on Wednesday: Honey was joyfully rolling in the grass! She also comes into house regularly on her own now. Her confidence is growing that no one is here to hurt her. This is a beautiful process.
5/21/24-Honey now turns her head to listen while I talk with her. She’s also started to come in the house on her own. There are many baby steps of progress every day over the last 16 days to undo the past of this very sweet girl. While my kids and I work in the yard, she stays outside watching us very closely. We walk over to pet her a bit then allow her some space. She is learning that people can be kind. Seeing her daily progress is fulfilling, and she is so good, gentle, and going potty outside. I am intuitively following her lead and working daily with what seems to help her move forward with trust. When I come at lunch, she goes outside to go potty with other dogs then comes in. House is clean while I’m away. She’s a precious sweet girl, just needs time
5/20/24-Honey will sleep in my room sometimes and will let me pet her. Often times she still runs from me though. I don’t want to force her, she’s already traumatized from breeding life. She is still improving every day though. She goes potty outside. I do not crate her as she doesn’t like the crate. I kept her secluded in the foyer at first until she learned how to open the door. LOL She knocks down gates too. You don’t even know she’s in house though. She lays down, not a Peep at night unless she has to go potty, then she howls. She has no interest in treats yet, only her meals and water. I feel that she’s enjoying her freedom and runs from me like she’s afraid of being stuck back in a cage. Poor baby! She was just outside happily sniffing and trotting before bed. Once I get her lead she just comes in and runs to a space to lay down. I was just petting her and she’s going to sleep. Honey is a very sweet girl & just needs someone patient enough to help her adjust more to her great new life.
5/17/24-A lot can happen in 2 weeks with a rescue baby. This is Honey, my foster mama who arrived 2 weeks ago tomorrow, thankfully transported from an Ohio “commercial breeder” who was done breeding her. When she first came to us, she defeatedly hid in corners, indicating trauma and symptoms of being kept in a cage for 5 years except to breed. Every day is baby steps…Honey now keeps her head up instead of downwards and makes eye contact, uncovering a beautiful spirit and amazing intelligence. She actually has started to regally smile sometimes and will tolerate a selfie for a few seconds. Lol Honey has discovered she has legs to run with on soft grass while happily listening to birds sing, is responding to English words and to being treated as an individual with a name, and Honey is tentatively learning that people can be kind. She accepts pets from my kids and me while watching everything, and follows cues from my rescue boys, including doing her business outside. Honey is a totally different rescue than I have ever worked with. THIS is the face and reality of some “commercial breeders”, and I think about those nameless, precious souls who never make it out. With our insanely busy household, we are Grateful for this rewarding process of undoing and healing so Honey may move on to the brighter life that she deserves.
5/9/24-Honey is adjusting well to her freedom of living in a loving household. It’s understandably taking her some time but this past week she’s made positive strides. Honey does very well with my teenage kids and other dogs. She is shy and is still coming out of her shell. Honey displays incredible joy in trotting about the yard, feeling grass beneath her feet, and listening to the birds sing. She also enjoys looking out the window. Honey lets me know when she needs to go outside to do her business by giving a howl! She is improving with being on a leash. Honey is also very smart and has figured out how to open sliding doors! Honey is not crate-trained. She is a heavy girl to load into a car but then she lays down nicely. Honey has a beautiful spirit and deserves the best in life. Due to vet back-ups her spay is not until Wednesday 5/29 & she will be ready to go home after that.
05/02/24-Honey is a beautiful 5 year old female Standard Goldendoodle (Standard poodle/Golden Retriever). She was a commercial breeder release as they were just done breeding her. She arrived safely into rescue tonight thanks to her transport & temporary foster volunteers. Honey passed her cat test & had a bath at her temporary spot. She has an ear infection she is being treated for. We are still trying to get a spay appointment & a more detailed check on a possible low grade heart murmur & 2 small bumps. Once we get her medical & spayed taken care of & we get to know her better Honey will be ready to go home.
