UPDATE FROM GRETCHEN'S FOSTER MOM (5/18/2024): Gretchen has been in foster care for a little over a month now, and she is simply a joy. If you love a puppy, this is the girl for you! Gretchen loves to play, enjoys playing with her foster brother, and loves her babies (her stuffed toys). She has mastered my home and yard. And I am very comfortable taking her out. We are walking on a leash, but she scares easily out in the open. She has been to a restaurant on the boat and to the golf course. Gretchen has melted even the cat lovers' hearts. We are helping her learn desired behaviors by using a spray bottle to get her attention. She is so smart and learns easily! Remember, Gretchen doesn’t need sympathy; all she needs is a family to love her and provide her with structure, so she knows what to expect. Please contact her foster family with any questions.

BIO: Gretchen came from Alabama when she was turned in by her owner because she could not care for her blindness and deafness. Gretchen does not know she is special needs; all she knows is she is loving life. She is all puppy, so do not apply if you are not prepared and have experience training a puppy. We are going to recommend a book for anyone interested in adopting her called “Through A Dark Silence: Loving and Living with Your Blind and Deaf Dog” by Debbie Bauer.

Gretchen loves attention! She is learning not to jump on people for attention or because she’s happy to see you. Some of this could be puppy energy, but it is something that will need to be worked on. She will potty outside if kept on a schedule or use puppy pads.

It’s best if you have a very playful dog or puppy yourself so she has another dog to interact with and play with. She is VERY smart!

She does well on a leash but does not like a crate. She will have no problem finding herself around your house or yard. If you are interested, please email her foster mom for more info.

============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund’s back or get bitten.

If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed on the bio form. They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.

There will be an additional $60 fee added for a required Health Certificate if traveling out of the state in which they are being fostered.

We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states. If you have any issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.

To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page. Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Click this link to apply: https://www.allamericandachshundrescue.org/apply, it will take you to the application form.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers who will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or Midwest. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. Please look for dogs on your coast.
