MY AGE: DOB 8/10/14 WEIGHT: approx. 9 lbs
MY STORY: Gertie came to our house in August of 2024 as our foster dog. She was a scared little Yorkie with so much to learn about living in a home and not in the barn with which she was familiar. You see, she had spent her previous life producing puppies for the farmers and now she was starting a new life where all she would know was love and kindness.
In order to live in her new foster home she had some things to learn! Stairs up and down. Living with unfamiliar sounds and smells. The excitement of a toy. Walking on a leash. Sharing space with two know-it-all Yorkie roommates (who seem to know the code for snagging extra treats). Where to go for appropriate potties and lastly the biggie, “HOW” to trust people?!? Trust was and is the most difficult. Each milestone listed she has conquered with practice and perseverance. We are so proud of Gertie!!! All that is left to work on is TRUST. It will take time.
Gertie will sometimes take a treat from us but mostly she will run past us and follow the resident dogs. She trusts and loves dogs. She’s never been socialized with people. (We are working on this) Gertie does now know the command stop and will sink down to let us pick her up. She does not come when called and often skitters around the room nervously. When we are watching TV, she will come in the room and calmly lay in her dog bed as she likes to be near the family. She will lay on her foster dad’s feet. She will sit on our lap if picked up.
Years of living in fear has taken its toll, but Gertie is a tenacious terrier and will persevere! We believe she loves us in her own way and her journey is far from over.
Gertie is gentle, silky, funny, tenacious, and the sweetest little peanut who loves to be “one of the gang”… on her own terms.
If you would be the one to help her overcome her fears then please apply for little Gerts. She’s come so far and worked so hard!!
She will need another small dog(s) in her home and a securely fenced yard.
We hope you consider our sweet and darling Gertie girl!!
12/8 Update: A December update on Gertie is here!! She’s doing GREAT!! Yes she’s still skittish but also enjoys being carried and cuddled.
When people are visiting, who she doesn’t know, Gertie just escapes to a quiet place. A dog bed or quiet corner will do. So Holiday time with Gertie has been easy and lovely. She doesn’t bark at people… she just escapes to her comfy zones.
Her house training is now perfection and she runs in and out (fenced yard) with our two resident Yorkies. Gertie is fine with snow and cold. She gets her business done fast and is back at the door to come inside. She’s a smartie and knows what’s expected.
Gertie sleeps on our bed at night and cuddles against my legs off n on. She is quiet. In the morning she hops off the bed and zips fast down the stairs and out the back door and then back in for her favorite… breakfast!
Gertie travels like a dream in her doggie car seat and I carry her into quiet venues like coffee shops and antique stores. She’s sooooo good!! I carry her around and she’s perfection and looks like a doll.
Gertie at our home loves to snuggle in her dog beds, play with her little dog friends and her favorite person in the house is foster DAD!! She hangs out with him while he works on his computer. She sits at his feet.
Gertie will require another little fur-friend in the home as a mentor dog and needs a safe (for little dogs) fenced yard area. She goes potty outside but needs her yard. That’s what she knows and it works for her.
If you think you fit our sweet girl Gertie then apply. She’s still shy but at the same time snuggles on my lap. Her personality is endearing and her sassy butt wiggle is hilarious! She’s just the best little Yorkie. You won’t be disappointed.
