Meet Duke
Duke was a stray that showed up at a lady's house in Nichols, SC. He was living under an abandoned shack across her road and would sneak over to eat her dogs food which would then turn into a dog fight. Duke was in survival mode. He was skinny so had been on his own for awhile.
It took hours to catch this sweet boy, he took treats, let us sit next to him and pet him but once he saw the leash he would either run off or back further underneath the shack.
Reinforcements had to be called and we finally got him. We don't know why he was terrified of a leash, maybe he'd never seen one or maybe he was mistreated with one, but now when he sees a leash he knows it's time for his most favorite thing in the world, a walk.
Duke is an extremely lovable, happy boy. He is great with all animals and LOVES little dogs. He is around 4 years old we are guessing he's a Weimaraner/Lab/Pit mix, He walks beautifully on a leash and is crate trained. Though Duke is dog friendly, we have found that he's not a fan of rambunctious dogs that play rough. He also doesn't like when all the dogs run to him and start sniffing him, so he will snap and then run to a human he trusts hoping they protect him. He gets overwhelmed if we let him out during play time but does great when he's one on one.
Duke had heartworms when he first came to us, but has been treated and recently tested heartworm negative!
He is scheduled to get neutered on 9/18, so will not be ready for adoption until then. If you'd like to meet Duke please message us. We can conduct a meet and greet and home visit before his surgery so that he is ready to go home right after the procedure.
