Meet DOC

IF ANGELS WALK AMONG US...DOC IS ONE OF THEM.

As tragic as Doc's story is, it is also a story of love, loyalty and the power of companionship.

Doc came to be with us, in the fall of 2023, after his owner passed away. Doc and about five other dogs, rescued by their owner, were left behind when the owner was placed into hospice care. A neighbor who had promised to take care of Doc and the others, reached out to us for help and we just couldn't say no.

He told us that Doc had been the most devoted to his owner, laying with him all day and night, as his health failed. When Doc came to be with us, you could tell he was lost and sad, without his person and fate intervened as it often does.

One of our most devoted volunteers, had a brother who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He had also lost his son in a car accident and his dog, all in the same span of time. He was given about a year to live and though he wanted another dog, he knew it would not be right to bring a dog into his life, only to leave it behind so soon. The volunteer reached out to us, to see if we had anything that needed a foster, maybe a foster that could stick around for awhile and as I looked at Doc, sitting curled up on the couch, with sadness in his eyes, I knew it had to be him.

The man's name was Roy and the connection with Doc was immediate. Within seconds of Roy arriving, Doc was on his lap, snuggled in as if to say, "This is my new person".

Doc and Roy were inseparable from that point on and Roy had some very good months, filled with camping and travel and visiting friends and making memories, with sweet Doc, ever by his side. For nearly a year, they enjoyed their friendship but as cancer does, it won the battle. Roy passed away on December 27th and Doc, ever his guardian, laid with him as he took his last breath.

This is an amazing dog. He loves with his whole heart, giving of it without care. I think dogs can sense illness in us and I think Doc knew, Roy was not long for this world so maybe that is why he bonded so completely with him. He knew Roy needed him. Or maybe we are just reading too much into this friendship, simply because Doc is a great little guy, but I don't think so.

Doc is back with us again. He is adjusting to a new life in his foster home and is still kind and sweet and gentle. He loves nothing more than to be near his human. He loves lap snuggles and walks and car rides and gardening and camping and whatever the day may bring. At night, he burrows under the covers with you and is not much of an early riser. Preferring to languish a wee longer, in the warmth of the covers, as you start your day.

Doc is estimated to be 8 or 9 years old and in marvelous health. We really do not know what kind of life he led, before he was rescued by the person we got him from originally but he has no fear of people, gets along just fine with other dogs, though would probably prefer a home where he did not have to compete for his person's attention. We are hoping to give him that. He might chase a cat, if it wants to run away from him but has shown no interest in chasing his foster's kitties, who are very dog savvy. He is housebroken, crate trained, great on a leash, an excellent and willing traveler, loves his toys and playing with them, either with you or by himself, and is a great little size at around 12 lbs. He has beautiful expressive eyes, pricked ears, a sleek red coat and a tail that curls over his back, when he is happy or excited. If Doc has a flaw, it is that he really does not like the action of being picked up, though he is fine once in your arms. He will grumble about the process a bit, but there is no nip or bite. Just an expression of the indignity. In a nutshell, he is pretty turn key and easy to have around and we think it is time for Doc to have a healthy owner, he will not have to say good-bye to, any time soon. This time around, we are hoping he will not outlive the person he loves.

So if turnkey, small, clean, easy, quiet, loyal, loving, fun and nearly perfect in every way, with just enough quirk to be unique, is what you are looking for, and you are healthy and not going to leave this world anytime soon, that you are aware of, how about you put in an application for sweet Doc. He is deserving of love more than any dog we have ever come across and if you look verrry closely, you might just be able to see his angel wings, beginning to grow.

Doc is around 8 years old, neutered, up to date on five way and rabies vaccinations, fecal tested clean of parasites, flea and tick free, microchipped, has had a recent dental and is ready to bring love and loyalty and even a bit of silly fun, to your life.

Adoption fee is $325
