Meet DIGBY-JJ (RALEIGH NORTH CAROLINA)
Digby is a 6 year old (as of 5/29/2016) neutered male purebred Catahoula. He weighs between 65 and 70 pounds. He is current on vaccs, HW tested and negative, on heartguard prevention, on frontline for flea and tick control. He is fed twice daily (Costco Kirkland dog food) He is a normal Catahoula with stimulus leash pulling but he does well on a harness and will respond. He is a great running partner. He runs every day and loves it. That keeps him in good form and healthy. He is good off leash where he is not encountering children or aggressive dogs. He has done off leash hiking where society was limited. He is good with dogs off leash, good with little dogs and should be with females not with males, but he needs introductions and he needs dogs that are space respectful so he would be better off as an only dog. He has never been around cats but he will go after a squirrel so we are saying no cats. He is awesome riding in a vehicle. He is a little nervous at the veterinarians but not excessively so, and they trim his nails, they do muzzle him but it is a preventative thing that these vets do. He is fine with feet handling when owner dries his paws off and no resistance. He loves swimming in lakes and rivers but forget rain walks. He is a good swimmer. He swims with his owner. He is a very good dog, a wonderful loyal companion dog in his prime. He is open wire crate broke with a cover on it and he loves his crate. He is allowed on the owners couch when they are home. He has a tire he plays with and he loves playing fetch with a ball, no stuffed animals for. him. This dog loves children, however, there is a bite incident with a small child who cornered him (Detail will be given and it was not vicious or the dog’s fault) So no toddlers but older dog respectful children would be good as long a they do not have a very high energy field or special needs children. He should not be left in a yard unattended with owners gone, he will try to escape to be with his owner. He would take on a fence to do that. He just loves to be with his people. He likes the yard when she is close by. It isn’t anxiety or a desire to escape, but it is pack participation and anticipation. If left outside he would unattended for long periods of times he might bark. He does alert with strangers but he needs to be introduced and then accepts company. He is protective of his home and family.
HISTORY: He has been with his family since he was 6 to 8 weeks of age. If it were not for two small children and the bite incident this dog would never be on the re-home adopt program.
GOOD: He is the owners best buddy and sooo loyal and they are grieving over letting him go. Owner feels very safe with this dog and comforted. He is a goofy dog that is very vocal in a fun way. He sings a song with a fire truck and he is clown when expressing his opinions in life.
BAD: A minor bad thing is that he does have the double gene eye deficit which is probably very minimal and would maybe affect his peripheral vision. Very common a lot of Catahoulas. That also could cause him to be more reactive to small children. He should be crated when family is gone because he gets mad at being left behind and will act out and have a little temper tantrum and destroy things or just be naughty. Again typical Catahoula stuff.
UGLY: THE BITE INCIDENT: The family has two children ages 3 & 1/2 and 7 months. Owner was nursing one child while the older child was chasing the dog and squealing and in all hyped up situation. The dog got between owner’s legs and was trapped there, and the child pursued, and then he turned around and nipped the child.. very fast but it was a correction not vicious, however, the bite incident was above and below the eye and needed 7 stitches. Kids are on face level with dogs.
