Dexter Akita & Pit Bull Terrier Mix Houston, TX

This gorgeous boy's story is a little longer since it is a very special one.  On May 24th, 2020, six puppies were born to a severely malnourished, heartworm positive, white Pitbull momma.  Their dad was the neighbor's beautiful and healthy Akita.  The momma also had intestinal parasites and was overall very sick so the babies did not get the developmental nutrients to help them thrive in utero or during the first 6 weeks of life before we knew them.  We helped the owners with medical, food and supplies to transfer the puppies and momma indoors and out of the brutal Houston summer heat in July but over the next few days we found them back outdoors and getting sicker.  The owner finally surrendered them to us when one little girl puppy wasn't eating and was being kicked to the side. 

Thankfully we were able to take in all 6!  We tried to get the momma too but the owners disappeared with her.  Of the 6 puppies, we were able to find that 3 of them were mostly healthy and have avoided any long-term issues.  Another beautiful sister is deaf but otherwise a normal happy pup who was adopted to the best momma and fur-sister.  The baby who wasn't eating is named Ginger and was adopted by the founder of our rescue - she is mostly blind, mostly deaf, has a sensory disorder, GI issues and has canine dysfunctional behavior which is similar to autism in humans.  

The 6th puppy is our beautiful Dexter.  Dexter only has slight GI issues but he also seems to be a permanent toddler in a dog body.  While this can make it hard for him to bond with new humans, this trait actually makes for quite the most kind, loving, snuggle bug you’ll ever meet. He lives with a medical foster mom who takes in our sickest puppies and Dexter has found his calling as their caretaker!  He loves every single puppy who comes, and he helps to raise them and show them love and patience.  They crawl all over him and he's obsessed with them!  He doesn't usually like adult dogs although he's even fine with the adult dogs in the home who he's known since they were babies.

"Dexter Wexter" has a wonderful bond with his foster mom (Miranda), and our founder (Kim).  If he sees, hears or smells his Auntie Kimmie then you will know it.  He LOVES her with his whole wiggly body and even says "I loooove you!" while she runs toward him.  His favorite thing ever is belly rubs! He will let you rub his belly as long as you are willing. He gives the sweetest kisses in the world, in between the little nibbles on your nose. He wears his emotions very openly. He will let you know if he’s sad, mad, happy, or just content.  He even does this thing we call the Dexter Melt - anytime you love on him and he wants more then you'll start to see his booty slide, then legs follow, then the belly opens up and he's just a melted pile of Dexter waiting to accept all the love.

Dexter can have a hard time trusting humans but once he does then he's the most loyal to them for life.  We had found a family for Dexter when he was younger and that's when we found out that he was not ready to leave our rescue.  He panicked when he lost sight of us and we had to rush back to him and help him calm down.  That was ~2 years ago and we have thoroughly enjoyed watching Dexter's personality evolve.  Over the last 6 months, we've seen him pick and choose new dog-loving relaxed humans that he approaches and bonds with quickly.  We believe he is ready again to look for his furever family and to have the full life he's always deserved.  

Overall, it may take a little bit for him to get to know you and trust you, but once he does, he’s the best boy in the entire world!  We will be there for Dexter for his entire life so we are looking for his furever home nearby so that his foster mom and our rescue founder can each visit and be a constant in his life.
