Darla's owner in Waterloo, Iowa, no longer wanted to have pets after having a baby. Owner tried for several weeks to find Darla a home or rescue with no luck. She was going to put Darla down if she could not find someone to take her. Luckily a WPR foster home was willing to take Darla in so Darla's life was saved, and she is now living in a foster home. Darla had already been spayed, and she is now up to date on shots, and tested heartworm negative.
Darla is about 3 years old. Darla is a sweet girl and loves people and children. She is a big girl at 64 pounds so only risk would be knocking a little over by accident. Darla has not been around cats. She does ok with some dogs and not others. Not sure why she decides she does not like certain dogs. She loves Bagel who is another foster dog and he is a beagle mix. So is best if she meets your dog if you have a one. She tends to get jealous too of other dogs if you are giving more attention to the other dog than to her. Have noticed that she barks at men and sometimes strangers. She seems to be loyal to her person. Of course, losing the home she has since a puppy through NO FAULT OF HERS, is confusing for her. She is trying hard to figure things out and find her place in the world. She loves attention and butt scratches. She stays close to you and loves to cuddle. She has young energy so would love a fenced in yard to keep her safe and to run around in. She would love an active person that will walk and play with her.
3/10/25 UPDATE: Darla has a health issue that now seems to be fixed with a change of diet. She can only eat a prescription food and nothing else. She had lost a lot of weight because of almost daily diarrhea.
The diagnostics include CBC/Chemistry/T4, urinalysis, fecal,
radiographs, abdominal ultrasound, and GI panel ( Folate, Cobalamin,
cPl, TLI). Based on these diagnostics, we are working with the presumptive
diagnosis of Food allergy and/or inflammatory bowel disease.
Treatment includes a very strict diet of Hills K9 Z/D Low Fat
(Hydrolyzed Soy) at 5 cups/day for weight gain, metronidazole (which has
since been discontinued) and a comprehensive deworming with panacur.
Darla is doing well, has solid stools again, and is gaining weight back. She can still be adopted into a home that is willing to keep her on this food. And consult with their vet if issues ever flare up again.
Will someone please adopt Darla and give her a forever home? $150.00 adoption fee.
WE ARE A NO-KILL 501-C-3 NON-PROFIT RESCUE. All donations are tax deductible. We do not have a shelter. All pets live in foster homes. We only adopt to indoor homes. To see an animal, you must fill out an application first and then once approved, we can set up for you to meet the animal you are interested in. We do background checks on all applicants. If you have assault, domestic abuse, or drug charges please do not apply. If you have questions, please send an email to waverlypetrescue@mchsi.com
All animals see a vet for shots and normal exams. If they appear healthy and there are no obvious health concerns, then extensive testing is not done. This is normal procedure for pet rescues and shelters.
Waverly Pet Rescue puts a lot of money into medical care for each dog and cat we take in. $350 is the average cost for basic care. This does not include if the animal had an injury, required extra flea / ear mite treatments, or needed extra days at the vet office.
