Meet Cyrus

New Jersey & NE followers, looking for that nearly perfect, big, amiable guy in need of a permanent, loving and deserving home?  If so, you must get to know the very best boy, Cyrus!

Cyrus had been at a small local city animal control shelter in the DFW area for over two months and was on the short list for euthanasia due to lack of shelter capacity. The staff actually held back Cyrus at the last euthanasia round, still holding out hope as they all had come to adore him, But they wouldn’t be able to continue doing so. Because of this, the decision was made to pull him for full vetting, neutering, and locating a reputable and agreeable rescue to assist in his adoption. Big Dog Rescue Project stepped up.

The current fosters are volunteers with Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue (a breed-specific rescue) and Cyrus first came to their attention as the companion of a PyrX who they pulled from that same city shelter a little over a week after the dogs had been captured together. Because of the PyrX’s microchip, it was determined that both dogs came from the same owner who had made the sad decision to dump them on the rural outskirts of the city. The owner  agreed to fully surrender them to the shelter.

Cyrus presents as a purebred, medium-coated sable large American GSD although with soft "puppy" ears. He is approximately 15-16 months of age. He has a wonderful friendly disposition, indicates excellent intelligence, gets along well with other dogs, good with children age 5 and over (compatibility with those younger is unknown at the moment), is cat tolerant, housebroken and walks well on lead. He is HW negative and received his ProHeart-12 injection. He does extremely well in a crate. He currently weighs 80 lbs but is a tad underweight - likely he will weigh close to 90 lbs at peak.

Cyrus is, however, still an adolescent dog (a bit puppyish) and will test items off-limits inside and outside, so requires some supervision and immediate correction. But he learns quickly. His fosters believe he would excel in obedience training, and likely agility too, which would also help build his confidence and bond with his adopters. He still finds reassurance in the presence of other dogs, and will follow their lead but they believe he can adapt to being an only dog if the household actively includes him in their lifestyle preferences (such as hiking, camping, biking and the like). Cyrus also is perfectly content to just quietly kick back with his people during more relaxed times. He is equally responsive to both praise and food motivation in training.

Does Cyrus sound like the companion dog you're looking for? If the answer could be yes, please complete our NE application. Link posted below ?
