Meet Cooper
11/6/2024 Update
Cooper has been settling into his foster home another month. The following is additional information for potential adopters to consider before applying for Cooper:
Yes, Cooper is only 76lbs; However, he does not look like a 76lb dog. It is hard to show in pictures just how big he is; but everyone who meets him, even when they have been told how big he is, is still surprised. Two separate people have said it’s “eye-opening” when you actually see him in person. He is very tall/long. He makes his 50lbs foster brother look like a 30lb dog.
At first Cooper didn’t destroy toys, but once he was comfortable in the house, he started to. It is possible he never had access to toys in his previous home. He cannot be trusted with fabric toys, as he has eaten parts and has to be monitored with them. He does just cutely cuddle with some, but he is a wildcard with when he may start to chew one, so it’s essential Cooper is fully monitored with them. He loves balls, and will be perfectly happy with oversized hard tennis balls as his primary toy. Small children with little toys laying around everywhere would not be a good environment for Cooper.
Cooper has great table manners when you are actively eating your dinner. He will sit and stare quietly and not try to steal anything; However, if you leave food around or turn your back, he will eat it. His mouth is very large and he swallows very quickly. Cooper is on sensitive stomach dog food that he has adjusted well to. He has a sensitive stomach and has been enjoying frozen pumpkin Kongs. The food he consumes needs to be monitored.
Cooper’s submissive smile can be confusing to children. Even when explained to them, if they are overly excited or anxious, he may bare all of his teeth when approaching them. Because he also sneezes, he will open and close his mouth in a “chomping” type behavior while baring his teeth. He comes in peace, but they do not understand that (Even some adults don’t). He is the sweetest boy when it comes to how he can be gentle and love others; However, because of this submissive smile trait he has, we are recommending he’s in a home with older dog-savvy children only.
It is clear that Cooper was possibly never walked on a leash in his first 4-years of life. He wants to please you and is treat motivated, and is definitely a candidate for training; However, I need to emphasize that Cooper is very strong. If he is on a new trail, it is much worse. If he’s on a more routine route, it’s easier to gain his focus. He will sit for treats to regain focus. When he sees a squirrel, you need to brace yourself for how strong he is. Cooper will require very consistent leash training. If walking or running with Cooper is the primary way he will receive exercise, this is important to consider.
Cooper alert barks: if he hears someone outside or someone comes in the yard. He has a very deep, loud bark when he alert barks. When he’s excited to see another dog on walks, he will have a high-pitched puppy bark instead to say hi to his new potential friend. He does not often bark when he sees other dogs on walks, but it depends on the other dog’s energy. Cooper does great with sitting and gaining his attention while another dog passes if he seems like he’ll get too excited.
Like any rescue dog, Cooper needs to meet all resident dogs. Cooper does well with other dogs. He most often does not even initiate play with other dogs. He just co-exists calmly with them, largely ignoring them after meeting. He will play with them if they initiate with him. He is very submissive when playing with his 50lb foster brother even though he is much larger than him. However, there have been some instances where a smaller dog with high energy has overstimulated Cooper. He was not at all aggressive, but he was overly interested and too active with the dog, and his size made it a difficult situation for him.
Cooper has grown even more into a giant cuddlebug as he becomes more attached to his foster mom. He doesn’t demand pets, he just wants to lounge with you. He does fabulous in familiar environments. He has been gentle with elderly parents who he can tell need that. I truly think if Cooper had the right training and household for the first 4 years of his life, he would've been the perfect dog to visit nursing homes and hospitals, spreading joy to everyone he sees with his sweet nature (and his ability to have his face at bed level just by standing there haha). If you have read about Cooper’s needs and still feel like Cooper is a good fit for you and your family, please apply today!

Are you ready to add the most handsome dog who has a fun-loving personality to your family? We think the photos speak for themselves - it’s impossible to take a bad photo of this photogenic, good boy! Cooper is a multi-faceted Doodle who's ready to take on whatever kind of day you have planned. Looking to lounge about for a while? Cooper will gladly cuddle up with you (talk about a body-length weighted blanket!). Rather get busy hiking local trails? He’ll be ready to strap in and take a trip with you - he loves car rides and exploring new places! Looking for a day of fetch? That's definitely Cooper's favorite plan. He can often be seen proudly carrying his favorite ball around.
This 4-year-old goofball would make a great addition to an active family with some solid dog training experience. He has some manners to learn -- especially keeping all four paws on the ground and approaching people calmly -- but he wants nothing more than to make you happy and he learns quickly! Talk about a smart boy! Cooper's a unique dog in size. At only 76 pounds, he's easily able to put his front paws on the shoulders of a 5'6" human -- and at the moment… he's likely to do exactly that! It’s just hard for him to resist coming up to shower you with a face full of kisses…but he’s trying to learn to do it only when invited!
Fun fact about Coop: He's a submissive smiler, which means he'll show all his teeth when you first come home or when he wants to remind you what a good boy he is and how much he loves you. This behavior is a part of his personality, and it's a rare one among dogs. You'll notice that his tail wags and he shows positive, social body language while showing his teeth, distinguishing his expression from aggression. He even does quite a few sneezes while he’s doing it! Once you know what he’s doing - it may just be the cutest thing you ever see!
Cooper does great with other dogs as long as he has time to adjust to them. He did not seem interested in playing with other dogs at first, but in just a month in his foster home he finally figured out how to use his big galoot of a body to romp around with his foster brother! He's great with older children who aren't intimidated by his size or playfulness. He's learning how to walk well on a leash but currently pulls (and he’s very strong!) and needs an anti-pull harness or similar training tool.
While we don't have an official DNA test on Cooper, we believe he's a pure Golden Doodle (if there is such a thing - a pure mixed breed). He’s been around a couple people with dog allergies, and they’ve been fine with him. He hasn’t shed at all, but does need regular grooming to keep his coat at an appropriate length. If you're ready to bring a fun, excitable, handsome new dog into your life, Cooper just might be the dog for you. He needs lots of mental and physical stimulation as well as affection and cuddling throughout each day. In exchange, he'll show you how good he is at staying calmly in his crate, catching airborne treats, running after stray balls and taking road trip adventures with you!
