CoCo Chihuahua Chihuahua Scarborough, ON

Coco the chihuahua is a total sweetie. She is 8 years old and was surrendered to Mattie's Place when her Mom had to be hospitalized and could not longer care for her.

She has a bit of an inflamed back disc and is on crate rest, as per veterinarian orders, but is fully mobile and with continued rest her back should heal completely as it was caught early and rested right away.

This is not uncommon with small dogs, like Coco, who is only 4 pounds, as jumping down from heights (couches, beds etc) takes a toll on the back.

Coco would be best with someone that works from home or is home most often. Her previous owner was a senior and that's what she is used too, though she does okay for short stints being alone.

We won't place her in a home with kids as she's nervous with kids and she's too fragile.

She would be best as the only pet in the home, as she has also had very little exposure to other dogs, other than socializing a bit on walks and has never met a cat. She does guard her food from dogs she's has minimal interactions with. There is absolutely no guarding of anything with humans.

Coco is a really sweet dog that you'll absolutely fall in love with. She'll need another few weeks of crate rest or quiet time with you, until her back heals. Moving forward she'll be a dog you have to support jumping up and down from any heights so she doesn't inflame or injure her back again.

FROM HER PREVIOUS OWNER:

She hasn’t really been with children. She is nervous with strangers and holds back until she feels comfortable and will at times lick their hand if it is held out. She is very loving and looks for my neighbor when she is outside once she got to know her. She is good with small dogs if they are calm. Otherwise she might bark and then hide. She has been ok with “calm” bigger dogs that will ignore her. She has nervous Nelly traits.

She does not play with toys. She guards her food and growls if another dog is near her food. If a human touches the bowl there is never an issue

She may growl when another small dog is too excitable near her

She likes a blanket. Likes to be held in a blanket on shoulder in the evening. - Likes to be held on your right shoulder. - Likes to hide under your shirt. - She likes to eat pieces of banana, has yoghurt for liquid meds, water melon, doesn’t chase squirrels. - Too much chicken will give her diarrhea. - Doesn’t like her mouth touched. - She is good with groomer when her nails are cut. One groomer holds her and the other trims her nails. - She travels in a carrier when in a car.

She gets chilly easily, wears a shirt or sweater at times and doesn’t go outside in winter unless in car.

She will not come when called.

She knows her boundaries when we are outside in yard but I leave a long leash on her to trail behind her in case I have to get her.

We are still being cautious with Covid lingering. All paperwork completed online, video home visits, meet and greets outside respecting social distancing, leashes/collars/supplies wiped down and disinfected (GermiCide 3 wipes)
