Meet Clifford: Adopted!
CLIFFORD IS IN A FOSTER HOME. Please submit an online adoption application if you would like to meet him. Thank you!
Date of birth: 8/2014
9/25/2017: Clifford is indeed a Big Red Dog! This big sweet boy is a 3 year old Retriever mix and he's had a very rough life. He was a longtime stray that had been on the radar of a rescue group for quite some time, and they were finally able to catch him after he was laying in the street too exhausted to get up. Clifford was covered in wounds and ticks and was very underweight. He also had heartworms. He’s gained weight and now weighs 60 lbs but still needs to gain more, and his wounds are healed up. He's also finished up his heartworm treatment. We’ve posted one photo that was taken when Clifford first arrived, and you can see the progress he’s made. He’ll be a beauty once his coat grows back in completely and he gains more weight.
Oddly enough, this former elusive stray dog just loves people now! He loves attention, loves to snuggle, loves belly rubs. He’s a mellow laid back guy. He was in a foster home for a few weeks. He's crate trained and house trained. He loves being a couch potato!
Clifford has anxiety when left alone and we've put him on Trazadone. He does much better when he is on it, and it is inexpensive. He needs a home with someone who is home quite a bit. He likes kids and can be around them when supervised, but there was an incident where he was sleeping and he snapped at someone who startled him before he was truly awake and realized what he was doing. So a young child in the home wouldn't be a good match for him.
Clifford does need a home without dogs or cats. He has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
MORE ON ADOPTING OUR DOGS...
Please visit our web site at HSGKC.ORG for more information about our adoption process, our adoption fees and all that's included, and for a pet adoption application.
> An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements. We encourage you to fill out an online adoption application and submit it before you come to see us. This helps us process your application more quickly and we can schedule an appointment for you to come in so that our small staff can serve you best. If you decide you'd like to adopt one of the pets you meet, we reserve the pet for you but we generally don't send the pet home with you that day. We’ll instead schedule a pick up date and time that’s convenient for you.
> Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home. All of our dogs & puppies have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks, tested for heartworms (7 mo. and over), and are on monthly heartworm preventative. Puppies who are too young to receive all the necessary puppy boosters and/or first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge. You will also receive a leash, collar, coupons for pet supplies and services, toys, and educational materials. And we'll give your dog a bath before he or she goes home!
> Please note that we prefer and may require a fenced yard for many of our dogs. Exceptions are made on an individual basis depending on the dog's needs, the person's dog experience, the dog's and person's activity levels, home environment and other factors.
Thank you for searching for a shelter pet!
