Meet Charlene (aka Charlie)
Meet Charlene (aka Charlie)! Charlie is a 5-year-old pure bred chocolate lab that weighs 70 pounds. Charlie is friendly, active, confident, and affectionate.
Charlie loves playing tug/pull, and she will happily vocalize/growl when playing and pulling. Charlie does not need a family to have another dog in order to be happy, but if the family has another dog, Charlie would do best with a dog that is calm, yet playful.
Charlie is housebroken and crate trained. Charlie and our other dogs have the run of the house during the day until bedtime. Around 7:30 pm, we tell Charlie that it is time for bed, point at her crate, and she walks right inside and lies down. She has no problems making it through the night and is always excited to see us in the morning. She goes right outside to relieve herself and after that, she is ready for breakfast. During the week, Charlie goes on her first walk of the day after she finishes breakfast- around 6 am. On the weekends, Charlie still has the same wakeup and breakfast routine, but she is happy to lounge around for a couple of hours before heading out on a walk. Charlie is a big fan of teleworking and is the perfect office mate. She does not hog the WiFi, and if you confide in her, she knows how to keep a secret. She definitely enjoys her weekends too.
Charlie is an active and athletic dog that would love a family that has a yard and is also willing to take her on a couple of good, longer walks a day. Currently, Charlie has a morning walk right after she gets up and has another one in the afternoon. We walk for about 2 miles each time. Although she gets two walks a day, Charlie is still new to leash walking and will pull (especially at the beginning of the walk, much less at the end). We are working on her leash manners, but she will need to be with a family that is willing to continue to work on creating and reinforcing good behavior- on and off leash.
Charlie can be very enthusiastic (and will sometimes jump) when meeting someone new. If the person is calm, it does not take Charlie long to settle down, and (of course) the good behavior can be reinforced through training. Charlie is a very good girl and wants you to give her lots of positive praise and affection when she does the right thing.
Charlie loves her people and would do well joining a family where someone is home more often than not. If you have to run some errands, she will miss you, and if she hears your car in the driveway, she will run to the window to look. Charlie also loves a car ride, but she would prefer the front seat, so she needs a harness in order to keep her safe in the back. Charlie is a big fan of windows down- no matter the weather- but since it's not safe to have so much of her hanging out the window, we have reached a compromise where the window is rolled down enough that Charlie can stick her nose out.
Charlie will need a family that is willing to work with her command training and continue to practice and reinforce them. Charlie is also working on mastering commands. She knows “sit” and responds regularly whether indoors or outside. Of course, outside has more distractions, but she is working on ignoring those. More often than not, Charlie will respond correctly to, “come”, “off”, and “no”. Her biggest challenge right now is “Stay”- especially when we move out of her line of sight- but she’s improving. When she first came to live with us, she was not food motivated. As time has passed, she has learned that training treats can be a delicious reward too.
When we started fostering Charlie, she would bark or vocalize for attention. As she settled into our home and routine, she vocalized less and less. Now a days, she may bark if she is outside and has been waiting patiently to come in, or if you put on your coat and grab a leash because she knows that means she'll be going on a walk.
Charlie is a love bug. She has the softest ears and snuggles in even closer when you pet them. She is quite the comedienne and will lounge on a couch or bed in the most unusual positions that do not look at all comfortable, but she likes them. Charlie loves to play with her toys, and she will bring them to you in the hopes that you will join her in the fun. She thrives on your praise and affection and will always do her best to be a good girl.
