Meet Cecil - Golden Pyr - Special Needs
Cecil was originally found at 9- 10 months old dragging a leash in Carmel, IN. Due to a diligent Good Samaritan, who tried to find his owner, Cecil's history was discovered. He and his littermate were set free as puppies by someone who no longer wanted them. A neighbor fed them on a regular basis, but was not interested in keeping them. His littermate was killed in a coyote trap, and not wanting the same fate for him, gave him to her brother. Her brother didn't want him either and set him free in Carmel in hopes of finding a home. He was born in March of 2017. He has displaced aggression, which means when he is riled up about seeing another dog outside his area, he can't get to it, so it bites the thing closest to him,. Walking with a muzzle solves this problem. He loves going for walks, rides well in the car and gets along well with other dogs. We believe he is a Great Pyrenees/Golden Retriever mix. He has double dew claws on his rear legs, and dark eyeliner around his eyes. He has the look of both breeds. Cecil loves to give hugs by leaning on you, but he needs his space when doing his job guarding, and does not like to be manhandled. He currently weighs about 100 lbs. He was adopted for two years, and because of the adopter's incompetence in dealing with displaced aggression, after biting the adopter on a walk, they took him to the vet to be euthanized. Fortunately the vet contacted us, since he was adopted through IGPR, and saved his life by getting him back to us. Cecil will need an experienced adopter who is comfortable dealing with displaced and high value food aggression. He is a smart boy and responds well to training. Due to his rough start in life, we believe he does have some PSTD and reverts back to those protective behaviors when in a challenging situation. He is a sweet boy, who is well behaved in the house. He does not need to be crated when you are gone. He does need his space when doing his guarding.
He will be placed in an adult only home as an inside pet with access to visible secure 4'+ fencing, Pyrs and most pyr mixes do not do well with wireless fencing.
We recommend obedience training for all newly adopted pyrs, to help you create a special bond with you and your new friend, and so you have a well behaved canine. Great Pyrenees are willing to learn, but are not as eager to comply with commands as much as other breeds. They are bred to be independent thinkers. Applicants must be over 25, own their own home and all children in household must be over 18 years old. If you are interested in fostering or adopting Cecil, please complete the appropriate application on our website, www.igpr.org under the Adopt tab.
All of our dogs marked as needing foster homes are also available for adoption. In fostering a dog, the dog comes to you fully vetted. and groomed. You provide good quality food, grooming, and we provide the heartworm preventative and medical care, if needed* .(*Based on approval from IGPR.)
We also offer a foster to adopt program. You foster the dog, and have first right of refusal on them if an approved application is submitted for them.
Adoption fee is $350
