Age: 1-2 yrs old
Good with dogs: yes
Good with cats: unknown
Good with kids: Most likely - Captain is a very gentle dog
Weight: 66lbs
Name/Nicknames: Captain
My Story: Red Lake Rosie’s. Captain came to Pet Haven from northern MN. Captain is still a young dog, but displays a kind, gentle disposition to everyone he meets.
Hobbies: Captain really likes chew toys, chasing squirrels, and sleeping. He also LOVES playing with other dogs. He is a very playful guy around other dogs.
Commands/Tricks: None yet (at least none that we have discovered!). Captain is working on some basics.
Crate / Potty Trained:Yes. In two months at his foster dad’s house, he has not had a single accident (even with several 10+ hour days). As far as crating goes, this has not been an issue for Cappy. At times he’ll need a little gentle “encouragement” (via a grip on his collar) to get him in the crate, but he always goes in.
At the start of the time with his foster dad, Captain was always crated during the work day (typically 9-10 hours). Because he always was well-behaved, after a few weeks he graduated to an ex-pen (a 3-foot high 3’ x 3’rectangular pen. Having no issues with that after a couple of weeks, Captain is now kept in the ¾ basement during the day. Though there are many things he could chew on or mess up, there have been no issues.
Activity Level: Captain seems to be adaptable to varying levels of daily exercise. Right now he is getting a total of 25-30 minutes of walking a day. He could probably get by with a little less and would certainly like more. Free run of a fenced yard would be great (though he doesn’t have that now and is fine).
Fun things I do: Captain makes little squeaking noises and runs around when his foster dad returns from work. Captain is a joy to watch around other dogs as he is always good natured and up for playing.
Socialization/who I currently live with:Captain currently lives with his foster dad. There are not any other people or dogs (or cats) in the household.
Captain is a very loyal, loving dog. Once he gets used to you, he will believe that you are the most important person in the world and will give you lots of love and attention. He loves being close to you and will even try to get up in your lap just to get some extra attention. He seems to connect faster with male humans than he does with female humans (at times he appears to be mildly scared of females). This might be because he was mistreated by a female in the past.
My Ideal Family: The first thing that Captain would like is a family that can give a lot of “hands on” attention. He really likes physical closeness. His ideal family would include a human male resident. A resident playful dog would be great, but he would also be happy with occasional “play dates” or trip to the dog park. If he is going to be alone during the day, some kind of visual stimulation (like a view out the window to see squirrels) will help make the day pass faster.
Overall, Captain is a very “easy” dog – doesn’t get into trouble, doesn’t try to run away, doesn’t bark (though he will give occasional protesting yips when being crated or when you leave), stays away when humans are eating and makes a great, loving companion.
He truly has a sweet nature and just wants a home and a family he can call his own!
Captain is attending Pet Haven's medium/large dog adoption events and his adoption fee is $300 (cash or check only) and includes spay/neuter, heartworm check, current vaccinations, and microchip and registration.
Due to post-adoption services provided, it is Pet Haven's policy to only place dogs into homes within a 60-mile radius of the Twin Cities area.
