Meet Boomer

Are you looking for a low energy buddy to snuggle with on the couch? Boomer would love to be your new family member! He's a vintage pug at an estimated age of 10 years old, but he's still got his sweet, loving pug personality. He is a standard fawn color and has a beautiful, soft coat. He recently arrived from a shelter in Tennessee so not much is known about his past, but he was clearly well-loved and well-fed in his former home. As you can see by his pictures, he is very obese and will need portion control, no treats, and light exercise to bring his weight down in order to have him live most comfortably in his senior years. While he is a big couch potato, he does like to go outside and walk around at a leisurely pace, either around in the yard or on a walk. He can use steps but if they are particularly steep or if there are more then a couple, he should be carried as he's very top heavy and can lose his balance on them. He is better at ascending than descending. He has a luxating patella in one of his rear legs which occasionally causes a brief limp until his kneecap moves back into place, something common in smaller dogs. This puts him at a higher chance of arthritis (which many pugs get eventually) and is all the more reason weight loss is imperative for him. To lessen stress on his knee he should minimize high stress activity like steps and jumping. Since he weighs 30+ lb range currently, his owners would need to be able to lift him or possibly use a ramp up steps. He loves sleeping on the bed with you and will plop down nearby or even burrow under a blanket. He also loves being pet, including belly rubs and butt scratches. He is generally a chill boy but sometimes he will bark at a person or car outside, or cry if you leave him alone in a room. A true companion dog, he loves people the most and will follow you around (unless he's in the middle of his nap). He gets along very well with dogs and cats alike. He doesn't play with other dogs but he's happy to coexist with them and sleep by them. He rarely pays attention to toys but on rare occasion he likes to chew bits off of a stuffed squirrel and walk around with it. He isn't living with kids right now but he's so mild mannered that he likely would be okay with them as long as the kids are polite with him and are mindful of his physical limitations. He seems to be mostly potty trained (he goes outside without issue) but should be watched for infrequent marking and could need a belly band when unsupervised. He has been seen by our vet and his labs were good, but he will need a dental with teeth extractions at our vet before he can be adopted (scheduled in December). Being a pug, his new owners will need to be diligent about keeping his face folds, ears, and whatever remaining teeth he has clean. It does not appear that he has had any surgery on his nose or soft palate in the past. He has a crusty-looking nose (another common pug development!) which is responding well to moisturizer. And yes, he has a loud snore! If you are willing and able to care for a senior guy who needs a little body work so he can live his remaining years as healthy and pain free as possible, consider Boomer!
