Meet Beatrix

Oh, our dear, sweet, beautiful little gray sea lion, Beatrix… how we adore you so!

Bea was picked up as “a roamer” under some pretty suspicious circumstances, but regardless, here we are. Whatever her history, her previous owner did her a massive disservice, as it doesn’t seem she was exposed to very much in life and as a result is an absolute ‘fraidy cat. (She is also quite literally afraid of cats!) It took us so long just to earn her trust and get her out of her kennel to go outside. Please don’t misunderstand us; she was not displaying any aggression, she was just TERRIFIED and we were not going to push her to the point of utter distress. So we let Bea set her own pace!

The first several times we went outside, it took a lot of convincing to get her out of her kennel and out the door, and once we were outside, she’d just stand completely frozen in fear. Little by little she became more comfortable with the process, and now she actually enjoys getting out for some fresh air and exercise! Beatrix LOVES going for walks and is stellar on leash with virtually no pulling whatsoever. Despite the huge amount of progress we have made together, Bea’s safe space is still her kennel and she’s always eager to get back to it after an outing, which is heartbreaking considering how stressed the kennel also makes her.

Fearfulness aside, Bea truly is such a soft, sensitive little sweetheart. She becomes very attached to her caretakers. She’ll follow us around the yard or office, will plop her little hiney right down on our laps, and is a huge sucker for some good rump scratchies! She’s been perfect for us for baths and brushing, and was also a total doll at her veterinary visit!

Bea has met several strangers while with us and, while timid and reserved, wasn’t defensive at all. She’s also met some dogs, both much smaller than her and much larger than her, and was very well behaved and appropriate with them. However, because she’s so reserved and sometimes avoidant when it comes to experiencing new people/places/things while here at the shelter, further testing should be done outside this environment. As far as kitties go, my goodness, we have never seen a dog run out of that cat room SO QUICKLY when confronted by an angry cat! It seems as though she would likely very much respect cats in a home! Because she has yet to meet a child here, we can’t say one way or the other how she will feel about them upon settling into a home environment. What we can say is that a calmer, quieter home environment will be necessary for Beatrix.

Sweet Bea is probably a middle-aged adult and weighs about 45 pounds. She’s got the most gorgeous soft blue coat with faint brindling. She seems to be somewhat house trained, as she does go potty as soon as we get outside. Of course, due to spending most of her time in a kennel, she’s going to have to transition and adjust to a bathroom schedule once in a home environment. It’s tough to determine what her energy level is, but we think it’s probably moderate, if not lower.

Please understand that at this time we are not looking to place Beatrix in an adoptive home! Because she’s so reserved and sensitive here, what we are searching for is a foster home to get to know her better so that she can ultimately be permanently placed in the most appropriate environment for her. Our very good friends at One More Dog Rescue have all met Bea and they adore her as much as we do! They want to make her an OMD gal, but need a foster home in order to do so. If you think you’d be interested in being a bridge between shelter life and this sweet and precious kiddo’s forever family, please fill out One More Dog Rescue’s foster application via the link below! If you have any questions about what fostering for One More Dog Rescue entails, there’s a contact link on that page as well. https://www.omdrescue.org/fosterapp.html

Thank you for your consideration!
