Meet Barkley

** PLEASE EMAIL questions, please DO NOT call. We are a volunteer based group and are unable to handle the call volume.

WE WILL BE HOLDING ADOPTIONS ON SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS FROM 10-4 PM at our Adoption Center. Our adoption center is located next to CAL Ranch at 232 North Jones (I-95) Suite 170. NO APPOINTMENT NECESSARY, BUT WE DO LIMIT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE STORE.

Barkley is about 5 yrs old and weighs about 50 lbs. She was surrendered to the shelter due to not getting along with livestock and chickens. She needs to be the only dog in her home. She was housebroken in her home. She thinks she is a lap dog and adores attention of her humans. More will be known about me soon.

UPDATED INFO: This dog was adopted under the name of Barkley, but currently identifies as Noni (non Ee). The name Barkley was not appropriate as she isn't a habitual barker. She will give a bark or two at the next door neighbor yapping dog but no real barking. She will alert when their are weird noises in street or when someone knocks on the door. For the most part, she is below average for barking. Other verbal cues is a bit of whimper if you have not fed her in a timely manner (although she can be patient), and an interesting "hmmm, hmmm" sound if you are doing something she doesn't like.

She really like cuddling on a couch, especially if there are belly rubs involved. Ear scratches and rump rubs are also a favorite. She is quite smart and easily learns boundaries and respects them when understood. For example, she is allowed on 1 of 3 couches and doesn't cheat when you are away. She has a comfortable bed in master bedroom and never jumps on bed if not allowed. When visiting a different house, she will not jump on couches once she learns it is against the rules.

With humans, she is a very gentile and loving dog. Perfect for a stay at home person who doesn't have other pets. People have said she is very loving, even winning over non dog people, as well as quite polite.

Obviously just like any dog, gets super excited about the prospect of going on a walking adventure and can't contain herself. She is quite content to stay at home and lounge about, as long as she can get a scratch on the ear on demand. She should have a bit of a yard as the zoomies still happy on occasion, usually if you go into yard with her or have company.

She is mouth gentle, meaning if she is chewing on something inappropriate, like dental floss, she'll let you get it out without an issue. She does enjoy a quality chew toy, tennis balls being a favorite. Don't be surprised if she peals them after awhile. Tug of war with an old sock is another favorite. She does like to chew up plastic things like TV remotes, so they should be not in easy reach.

She is agile and has jumping ability and can, under the right circumstances, clear a 4.5 to 5 foot fence.

She is house broken and can easily "hold it" for up to 12 hours. She did have some accidents when she first moved in, but that was likely due to not knowing routines and schedules yet. I don' know if she knows about doggy doors, but I think she could easily learn.

Her current feeding routine is 1 cup at 7am and 7pm. She maintains a steady weight with this diet, has only had Costco dry food as a food source and had no issues with it.

Her biggest negative is she goes after any bird or cat she sees and doesn't interact well with other dogs. I swear she wants to dog with dogs but doesn't know how to dog. She gives all the wrong cues and if they make any sort of bark or noise she will fight. So that said, she needs to be the only dog in the home. She can not be taken to dog park, and I recommend going well around people with dogs in a normal park.

She is quite strong for size and pulls very hard on a leash. A throat collar is not a good mix on walks as she pulls on it to the point of choking all the time. A chest harness is the way to go with her. After a mile or so, she doesn't pull as much and it is a better experience.

She also suffers some separation anxiety with a lot of whining and nervous behavior if she is left behind her chosen human. A vet recommended medication, this was never tried. Her anxiety can lead to property damage, such as if she is restrained such as tied to a long leash or put in her crate. She came crate trained but hasn't been in one for a over a year. She will try to escape the crate if no one is around. She will literally force herself under the door and door will still be locked. I ended up having to push the crate door against a wall. She was only crated in the beginning for approximately 2-3 hours.

When she trusted and was comfortable with me. I just leave her free in house and she is ok. However if you are outside and she is inside, she does destroy blinds, bark, and whine. I'm told when I leave and she is in house with other people, she is also quite anxious. She came with an all metal crate and she will literally force herself under the door and door will still be locked. I ended up having to push the crate door against a wall. All in all she is a lovely dog, without other dogs around.
