Barkley came to us through a shelter partner.

He is a big, confident male who is two years old. He is neutered and fully vaccinated. He is heartworm negative.

Barkley worked as a livestock guardian with goats, and he could return to a pasture with direction from experienced Pyr or guardian-breed owners. He also could be a couch guardian with experienced Pyr or guardian-breed owners. Barkley came to us with a bite history, and we will share information about the incident with those interested in adopting him. Barkley was being teased and was not restrained, and when properly cared for by people who understand this breed, Barkley can be a good family member and safely interact with humans. Both the shelter and our organization agree that he is not aggressive toward humans who behaving properly around dogs.

Barkley does not like other large male dogs, but he would be a good match for a female Pyr or large female dog or small dogs of either sex. If a family seeks to adopt him as a livestock guardian, they should not have other large male dogs – including pet or inside dogs – on the property.

We do not know if he is cat-friendly, but most Pyrs accept cats if properly introduced. We do not have cats at the rescue and cannot test him.

Older children who know how to behave around dogs would be great for Barkley. Because of his history, we will be abundantly cautious and not place him in a home with small children.

Like all Pyrs, Barkley needs a solid and securely fenced yard. If he is working as a livestock guardian, he will need a more secure fence than hog wire. He has a strong roaming instinct.
