Meet Barkley
Barkley has learned to walk on a leash and is able to take leisurely walks around the neighborhood. He is not comfortable leash walking quickly or for long distances. He has also learned to go up and down the steps in his foster home.
Barkley does get very excited for meal time and for treats. He will growl/resource guard to protect his food bowl if another pet in the home approaches. He will need to be fed separately from any other pets in the home.
He is very affectionate will sit next to you all day for pets and belly rubs. He also loves to lay out on the sun porch to catch the afternoon breeze.
Barkley has a condition known as fly catchers syndrome. If he is sleeping, he sometimes suddenly wakes up and spins and snaps in the air…like catching flies. He also has occasional bouts of 'non-24,' meaning that his sleep cycle is disrupted. His foster parent can give more information about this condition. These are some things to be aware of if you're considering adding him to your family with other pets.
He currently lives in a foster home with several other dogs and does just fine, but he has not met cats yet. He has not had any issues sharing toys with his housemates. He also goes to doggy daycare and boarding occasionally and does well in this environment also.
Barkley is not a big fan of having his nails trimmed, so we use an experienced groomer or the vet to help with nail trims. He is comfortable relaxing in his kennel at night and and whenever he's not supervised.
A preference with his new forever home would be no more than 1 other low energy/mellow dog that can keep him company. A fenced yard is required for his adoptive home. If you're interested in meeting or adopting Barkley, the first step would be filling out an adoption application via our website scsheltierescue.com. His adoption donation of $300 includes neuter, vaccinations & microchip. APRIL 2025
